Oh I completely misunderstood this one. I thought the joke was that the age difference was borderline problematic so the guy was trying to eek out a few extra hours to make it less bad.

Nope, turns out it’s just astrology bullshit.

Astrology is fun if you don’t take it seriously. Same with tarot. I’m a 100% atheist but I do a tarot reading every night before bed to help with abstract reflection on the day. It means nothing, but it’s makes me look at things from a different angle.

If she wants to do a star chart for you then just relax and have fun. It’s a way for you two to talk about your lives and a conversation starter. She likes you dude, and if you take the opportunity to lecture about why this is silly then are really doing is sending red flags that you’ll talk down to her whenever you might disagree.

Edit: I see a lot of self reporting for thinking others are inferior for enjoying these things. Y’all should rethink your biases perhaps. But I am walking away and ignoring this thread now, I have reached my daily intake of sodium chloride for the day.

While I agree, and also do the occasional tarot reading for fun, some people actually believe they can deduce divine factual information about you from your date and time of birth. To me that’s a bit of a yellow flag that they might have other dangerous anti-science beliefs.

That’s not a yellow flag, that a flashing red flag. It tells you that they will probably believe all the quasi scientific-sounding fads that come up, and also that they are not good at critical thinking.

You are making a ton of assumptions based on stereotype. Not all people with tarot decks and star charts are anti Vax flat earthers. Just like not all Christians are pro life bigots. You are painting with a extraordinarly broad brush.

If you truly believe that your date and time of birth has any relation to your personality traits, them the only thing I am assuming is that you are a moron. I didn’t say anything about anti-vax or flat-earthers, though they are also morons.

has any relation to your personality traits

Well, most people don’t literally think that. There is a reason most horoscopes just use different adjectives for the same couple of things. Honestly, I feel like you are kinda self reporting for that “talking down” red flag I was speaking about originally. I don’t want to argue, you do you. But I just think you should show a bit more respect for people with different past times instead of assuming the worst of them. It’s a fun way to look at the world, nothing more.

Yeah, i didn’t explain myself very well. What I meant was being into astrology is a yellow flag, so you have to find out if they enjoy it a bit as a hobby, which is fine, or if they’re “true believer” into it, which is not fine.

I mean, I can. And get a baseline expectation on some others.

Of course, the thing I can deduce is your age, and the baseline expectations would be those associated with the generation you belong to. So, less astrology and more basic math.

I mean, by your own reasoning though it’s at least a yellow flag - if she’s just doing it because she thought it might be fun and cute, then yeah knock yourself out - if she looks at you seriously and says shit like “I need to make your star chart so I know if we’re compatible and whether or not we have a future together”, then I’d personally nope out of there

As respectfully and nicely as I can say this, I think you are making a lot of assumptions about people who enjoy this things. I don’t mean to be rude or speak with malice, but this sounds like a intolerant opinion based on stereotypes and is a close minded mean spirited thing to assume.

Astrology, tarot, etc are essentially just guided meditation. An option to think about yourself deeply for a while, and possibly more accessible and doable for certain types of people. The problems only arise when fraudsters use it for fraud.

Your approach is so refreshing. My partner is huge into tarot and believes that it allows him to receive guidance from his late husband. I figure it doesn’t harm anything for him to feel that his husband is still close, plus it gives him time to reflect on recent events.

I agree, but the problem is that a lot of people do take it seriously. It’s perfectly fine to enjoy these things if you just think they’re fun. But actually believing in things that are demonstrably wrong is definitely a huge red flag for me. I’ve also become extremely negative towards astrology in particular because I’ve had to deal with family who used to take it at face value and also because I love astronomy, which, to me, gets tainted by this pseudoscience nonsense that sort of imitates it.

Why don’t you skip the tarot reading 🃏 and just get straight to the abstract reflection on the day? 🤔

It means nothing, but it’s makes me look at things from a different angle.

Aren’t there other ways to do that? 🫤 Why not just listen to Sam Harris’ Waking up? 🎵 No woo needed. 😀

Edit: Downvotes for asking questions, why? Did I come off harsh? I’ve sprinkled emojis in to help soften the blow. 🤡

Because its fun to have a prompt? Idk. I suppose there are other ways, but this is the one I enjoy. Mostly for the different art styles.

You do you if Harris works for ya, I won’t judge. But I personally didn’t like the couple of episodes of common sense I listened to. I get the appeal, but wasn’t for me.

Because it gives what is essentially a random prompt to start from? Also some tarot decks have neat art, I’m fond of the Crowley Thoth Tarot because it’s just cool looking.

In astrology, a bunch of trivia about your life factor into your reading… So like basic newspaper horoscopes are just like “which range of dates does your birthday fall into? Oh okay you’re a Pisces then, so go read the horoscope for all Pisces…” But if you go to a “real” astrologer for a “real” reading, they wanna know other stuff, including what time you were born, and that’ll help personalize the reading.

Mom is making the assumption that the reason for the question is to use her response as input to an astrology reading. Instead of sharing the time of birth, she warns the subject to stay away from “her,” the astrologer, who are stereotypically female.

Short answer: The joke is that astrology girls are crazy.

Context: If you look up your sign according to your date of birth (sun sign) and find that it doesn’t fit your personality at all, well you just need to delve deeper, find out your rising sign and moon sign by having a professional (or algorithm) cross reference your time of birth with the fancy astrology chart. Still doesn’t fit you? Well you probably just got the time wrong because it has to be to the exact minute. Perhaps it’s that your mom doesn’t remember correctly, or that many hospitals will fudge the times a little in your birth records. You must work extensively with a professional astrologer, who will assign your sign based on whichever one sounds the most like you. You need the 3 signs for your reading to really “work”

I can only speak from personal experience, but 100% (as in all 1) of girls I’ve dated who were really into astrology were also ‘crazy’ in the genuinely-heard-voices sense. (She called herself that sometimes)

Putting aside the woo of astrology and the like, which can be harmless fun, I’ve learned to be a little wary of the die-hards - it’s not a long walk from all Sagittarius are _____ to all black people are _____.

It seems to encourage essentialist thinking that I’ve seen creep up on people.

Anybody that has a strongly held belief in superstition is off the “hang out daily forever” list. Be that a traditional superstition with meetings on Sundays or some equally incorrect combination of fate and astronomy.

While it may feel that way, beliefs aren’t an essential trait - they’re a choice. Holding people accountable for their choices is fine as far as I’m concerned… Even if that reaction is further than I’d personally go.

In the middle of watching the second season of Carnival Row here. So I thought it was because secretive evil cheating mom knows they’re related, in a Pornhub kind of way, and was trying to get the jump on shutting it all down between them before they made babies with sloped foreheads and braided family trees.

And it turned out to be nothing more dark than an interest in astrology. I should probably rethink my streaming consumption choices, lol.

Yea, the last girl I was dating was into all of that stuff.
