THATS ME!!!
It is the first time I see myself as a hiring manager. It’s not that displeasing though… Welcome everyone!
Holy cow this is me!
Welcome! Here are a few pointers to get you started
Finally took the plunge out of curiosity and a desire to dump reddit at some point.
Come on down to !dull_mens_club@lemmy.world
Welcome here! Here are a few pointers to get you started
If anyone’s wondering what you should do first, the first thing you should do is block hexbear, and the next thing you should do is join any instance other than lemmy.ml. lemmy.world is a good choice, but there’s probably one you’ll like better.
If you want to know the most trans-friendly instance, it’s lemmy.blahaj.zone. There are people who will tell you it’s Hexbear. Those people are liars.
If you enjoy drama, this is the place to be.
The last few days were wild
Really drained the strategic popcorn reserve I tell you hwhat.
I saw a mention of Lemmy on a random thread in r/politics so I’m tentatively having a poke about, since I’ve already tried to quit Reddit once (for Tumblr - it didn’t stick). I remember forums pre centralised internet, is it something like that?
Think of it more like email addresses. Know how a Gmail account can send email to an iCloud account just fine, and both display the same content? Same basic concept. You can have [account]@domain1.com and [account]@domain2.com, and they’re entirely separate accounts. Even if they have the same username, they’re on different instances.
Federation refers to how the instances share data with each other. One of the largest things to look for is what instances your instance federates with, because that will determine what kinds of users you end up interacting with.
Ahh, okay, so if I wanted to go just looking at a specific subject it might be better to make a second account and join another instance, and keep up two accounts?
You don’t need another account. Example to access a community on lemm.ee:
https://feddit.uk/c/casualconversation@lemm.ee
Which is the same content as https://lemm.ee/c/casualconversation
With an account at feddit.uk, it should be ok to navigated almost whatever community. The list of block instances is short and mostly block pedoporn.
Yes, you can consider it like a web forum but with the default sort set to “new post” not “new comment” as is done on Reddit. This tends to favour new content over longer discussion, although you’ll get active threads like this quite often.
And thank you for choosing feddit.uk, I hope you enjoy your time with us and if you have any other questions then fire away.
Thank you!
Welcome! Yes, it is something like that.
You chose the UK as your instance, so the local communities could already interest you: https://feddit.uk/communities
On top of that, here is a selection of 20 non-political communities: https://feddit.uk/post/22376629
App can be found on https://www.lemmyapps.com/
Finally, there is also !newtolemmy@lemmy.ca
Feel free if you have any questions!
Ah, thank you! I downloaded an app first, since I primarily use my phone for everything and apps are just easier. I think the one I’m using is called Boost? It is less confusing than I was worried it might be :)
Boost is a good one, enjoy!
Welcome! Great to see people choosing our instance :) Like Blaze said, feel free to ask any questions, it can be a bit overwheling at first!
We’ve definitely seen an upswing in registrations this week, we usually have 1 a day and we are already on 8 today.
Id like to point out there are also some really good mobile apps for lemmy. I use sync for lemmy. Hopefully others will recommend there favorites. There are quite a few good ones!
Jerboa over here!
Boost is now a Lemmy app!
Seconding Boost for Lemmy, was my favorite before reddits api-lypse.
Connect never gets love but is great too
I use Thunder :3
I came from the first reddit exodus and it’s been great over here. You’ll get used to it in no time, I promise.
So did I but be careful or you well also get swept up by the brainwashing here, buying a Pixel to run grapheneos, installing Linux on everything, buy privacy respecting email services, VPN and paranoid of everything. BTW I use NixOS and I am still mostly sane.
Its true, this place is a fucked up linux echo chamber. After joining and after a lot of tests turns out distros like fedora and mint are literally what people want from steamOS.
It me!
I run Linux now.
I use a Pixel 7 (with GraphineOS) and a Librebooted Thinkpad T440p with Arch btw, also I use MullvadVPN and encrypted communication whenever possible.
I don’t own a smartphone thank you, so I won’t be getting a pixel. Already been running Linux for 15 years or so now.
Ah shit. I’m barely even sane and I haven’t even switched to Linux yet. I’m probs cooked.
I just stick to !superbowl@lemmy.world and !sillydrawingrequests@sopuli.xyz
Oh hello! Subbed.
For new people
- !newcommunities@lemmy.world , there is a pack of 20 non political communities
- !newtolemmy@lemmy.ca has a few guides
To Newbies, I just want to say:
If you aren’t a Marxist-Leninist, you might wanna stay away from the big 3 Marxist-Leninist (aka: Tankie) instances [lemmygrad.ml, hexbear.net, lemmy.ml]
Agreed, also if you’re not a Neoliberal I would stay away from World (or if you’re Queer, a minority, or someone who isnt comfortable with seeing bigotry).
!yepowertrippinbastards@lemmy.dbzer0.com for people interested (now I’m not sure that’s something we should show to new joiners ha ha)
Oh don’t insult marxists leninists like that. I guess what you really mean is that those instances are for russia/china simps or nationalists. There’s nothing marxist about theur views.
Just recommend the biggest instance that isn’t federated with them. Anyone got a list?
I do think it’s valuable to recommend the bigger instances. If they’re on a big instance, they don’t have to worry about federation at all at first. It takes no effort to slowly learn about federation, and later they have the option to move to a smaller instance.
This lemmy.zip person didn’t have a good onboarding experience. @zombiegirl2010@lemmy.zip maybe?
That’s actually me. I simply didn’t want to carry over that username but I guess I should claim it too. Lol
Yeah, I originally joined Lemmy during the first Reddit exodus. Then, I squirreled and did not spend the necessary time to learn much about it. However, this go around I’m here and I’m serious about learning it and using Reddit much much less (in hopes to abandoning it eventually).
Some folks helped me to find apps. I’m using Avelon and I really like it. It makes figuring Lemmy out MUCH EASIER than simply bookmarking.
Glad to see you here!
The reason I push people to Lemmy.World is that you mostly don’t need to learn anything about federation. It’s obvious enough over time what the @ symbols are, and you basically pick it up through osmosis.
If you start on a really small instance, your people might not subscribe to many foreign communities. If nobody subscribes to a foreign community, it doesn’t get pulled over and doesn’t show up in ALL. That can make Lemmy look pretty barren, and you have to go out and find communities (somehow) on your own.
If you start at Lemmy.World, the all tab just works. The local tab is even a fine experience, though I wouldn’t use it here. Similar arguments with lemmy.ca and sopuli.xyz for Canada and Europe. Their all tabs might be slightly worse, but for those people the local tab should be better (actually more local), balancing it out.
Their all tabs might be slightly worse
You are aware that with 1140 and 496 monthly active users, and the use of https://lemmy-federate.com/, the All tab on those instances, as well as any other instance with more than 100 monthly active is going to be the same than on LW, right?
This used to be true a while ago, but any instance in the top 20 (https://fedidb.org/software/lemmy/ ) is going to give the same All feed.
Well that one user sure seemed to have issues.
I see
Sounds great, and good choice of instance.
Here is a list of communities to help you get started: https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/35001146
I wish there were an instance agnostic way to link that post.
Looks like it might be a thing coming soon?
That’s pretty good. I also just saw that you matched their instance, which is great for that particular person.
I usually do that for new joiners, especially because here they have to interact with the content.
Thank you!
Sorted by “most active”, these are the ones I recommend:
sh.itjust.works [Users 28,811 total; 2,465 / month]
lemmy.ca [Users 8,604 total; 1,138 / month]
sopuli.xyz [Users 4,967 total; 496 / month]
infosec.pub [Users 4,240 total; 325 / month] (this also defeds lemmy.ml, which the ones above doesn’t do, but this is kinda small)
Edit: Also, if someone make an account on a small instance and just search and subscribe to everything, then it would make sure the communities are synched. (someone please go do that)
There’s also this one, [Users 172,000 total; 27,400 / month]
That’s going to be the smoothest experience for people who “don’t want to deal” with federation. They can always move later.
In EVE Online we refer to this as the Brave Newbies area, the biggest, zergiest group where you don’t need to know what you’re doing. It functions as a training ground and feeder group for the more elite groups.
I’ve just had a look at your Reddit history, and you seem to very insist on Lemmy.world (https://old.reddit.com/user/serinus)
Any reason not to show people to other instances? https://sopuli.xyz/ is a popular choice for Europe, and https://discuss.online/ has a good track record for a US-based instance.
A potential interesting post: https://lemmy.world/post/24577309
Because it’s the smoothest experience for new people. If you by default end up on the local tab, it’s not barren.
I agree sopuli is great for Europe and lemmy.ca is great for Canada. sh.itjust.works is also reasonable. But people looking for general social media will have the easiest time on Lemmy.World that is the most similar to the centralized experience that they’re used to.
If you want people to actually give Lemmy a fair shot, and don’t have a specific reason to guide them elsewhere, I think it’s wise to point them to .world. They can always leave later, after they’re more familiar with federation and Lemmy.
Lemmy.world is on 0.19.3, so they are missing the following features (https://lemmy.ml/c/announcements for the details)
- Post hiding
- List of all media they previously updated and ability to delete those
- Change the vote display mode, allowing them to show or hide up and downvotes
- Quickly show the modlog of a user
The second is a very valid point for privacy, the one that caused the whole GDPR issue in March 2024: https://tech.michaelaltfield.net/2024/03/04/lemmy-fediverse-gdpr/
The last one is useful when you doubt whether the person you are talking to is commenting in good faith.
So yes, LW is okay, but there are other instances which offer a better experience, especially with the status pages that a lot of them have:
- https://status.lemmy.zip/status/lemmy
There are also several occurrences of LW staff power tripping without coming back after other users have provided evidence that they may not have taken the best decision: https://lemmy.world/comment/14411953
How could I forget my Tankie Triad warning LMAO
Wanted to say this too. It’s Lemmy’s biggest problem and keeps putting me off. I don’t recommend Lemmy to people in person anymore because of them. I don’t know if I would be more disturbed if they’re mostly state actors astroturfing or just deeply unwell real people
What do you think of this idea? https://lemmy.world/post/24268267
I’m out of the loop. What’s this “Reddit thread from earlier today”?
Also, yes, welcome to former Reddit users. I’m also a former Redditor, but I left during the API pricing fiasco.
A thread on r/technology about Decentralized Social Media actually got some good traction so a few of us logged back in to promote Lemmy a bit lol
I deleted my Reddit account months ago :3
I still have it to promote Lemmy
This post is currently at the top of r/AskReddit, the following comment is currently at the top:
My honest opinion is I’d like to see the internet become decentralized again and less monetized.
This new hyper-monetized internet sucks so hard and places like X, YouTube, and Reddit are the issue.
Link - there’s already some suggestions of Lemmy, but it would be good to keep adding more!
Thanks for that. One of the comments at the top mentions the Web Revival. Great concept, of which we are playing our part. Might consider a community for that…
Ah! Cool! Always good to be expanding the fediverse.
https://lemmy.world/post/24558150
Maybe edit this link into OP for context
what did the greedy little pigboy do this time?
An article titled “Decentralized Social Media Is the Only Alternative to the Tech Oligarchy” hit the front page of r/technology and the top comment mentioned lemmy as a reddit alternative. Although the comment was removed when the OP later edited it to include a direct link to join-lemmy.org. Which probably indicates those mods have automod configured to automatically remove links to that site. But the good news is, it still got a lot of attention. It’ll be interesting to see if any instance admins will be able to verify an uptick in account registrations over the next few days.
Although the comment was removed when the OP later edited it to include a direct link to join-lemmy.org.
There’s now a thread on the removal which might make an easier place to add recommendations:
https://www.reddit.com/r/RedditAlternatives/s/UClqcjOY2p
Keep up the good work over there everyone, we can’t let @Blaze@feddit.org have all the fun of bring in new converts!
Nothing actually (for once (I’m sure el Spez’s hard right turn announcement will come soon though))
A thread on r/technology about Decentralized Social Media actually got some good traction so a few of us logged back in to promote Lemmy a bit lol
Hey newbies! Confused about how it all works? Don’t worry, you’ll get used to the confusion. Also, check out !creepywikipedia@lemmy.world for a good niche community.
Damn I’ve been here this whole time and I’m still not subscribed to that community. Nice one!
It actually is true that it takes time to find your way around the fediverse. But that’s also kind of nice because it means there’s always cool new communities to find. A lot of my current favorite communities are ones I didn’t find until after being here for over a year.
I should take the time to make a list of some of the hidden gems and sticky it somewhere.
