The participants Media Matters identified who held sponsored Twitch streams were Punisher, NateHill, Chica, brookeab, Astrobounder, and Grady_Rains

Fucking screw each of those streamers. Shameless cretins.

Imagine being like, mildly famous and wealthy.

Kind of at the point of your fantasy where you would start helping others because you’re a “good person!” so you will buy your mom a house. She did everything for you after all. You do a couple of those things and then it’s like… you know what I’m going to take money from big oil.

like what the FUCK. You know?

Fuck that behavior. You’re supposed to be better than those before you. Be better.

But what if I want to become a streamer and then have a questionable relationship with a teenager half my age (technically legal but still dodgy), while also promoting my own gambling site and energy drink? Oh, and a pay to win Minecraft server.

What if that’s my actual goal. It’s okay then right?

I think that’s fine. Since when did streamers become paragons of virtue anyways? Back when I started watching someone like HotshotGG, they were always thought of as degens living in their mom’s basement

It’s like watching sports, except you also have someone cracking jokes and being effectively a stand-up comedian.

But also, you’re assuming people always actively watch, which is not always the case. I tend to play a game on my main stream, while having a stream (or vod) open on another.

In addition, it’s also a bit like hanging out with a friend and watching them play. It’s basically sharing stuff and experiences with others, which is fun, even if you’re not a direct participant.

…and also, as the other commenter mentioned, there are games which you don’t really want to play, but are still interesting to watch.

          So sports

I think the weird thing is the people that see streamers like a friend rather than just picking a game they want to see and finding a stream without a face cam and a calm demeanour

Seeing a streamer as a friend is definitely getting into parasocial territory sure, but watching the same streamer all the time isn’t always unhealthy. People have specific sportscasters they prefer watching over others, it’s a similar concept with streamers. It’s not weird to enjoy one entertainer’s personality and content more than another’s.

The term that wraps all this description up succinctly is “parasocial relationship” and it is not a healthy coping mechanism.

it can be parasocial, but it doesn’t have to be. Neither does it have to be a coping mechanism. I still watch streams even if I get plenty of social interaction. I like streams specifically because I don’t have to be social, and can just relax.

But yes, of course, it can be problematic, and it’s important to be aware of that. Especially since there are some content creator that exploit that phenomenon. That’s bad. But you can apply similar criticisms to video games, how they can exploit our psychology and make us addicted or want to spend money etc etc. Doesn’t mean all games are bad, or gaming is bad, either.

Yeah man, nothings more parasocial than watching comedy. If you laugh at jokes a person tells with intent to make you laugh, thats a coping mechanism, and reddit tells me that makes it bad

Careful, trying not to rustle jimmies is a pretty big sign of a parasocial relationship. You should probably talk to a health professional before it gets any worse

My best friend got me playing it, he started playing it with his 6 year old son. But since my friend died last year I only play when his son calls me to join him. Hearing this news I will be canceling my subscription however.

When did fortnite become a subscription based system? Are you talking about the battle pass they have for a season? Or am I just behind on the times?

It is still totally free to play, but there is the battle pass and you can pay a monthly subscription to get a skin, coins, and the battle pass for free.

You can get the battlepass through in-game money (950 v-bucks/season). I was gifted my first battlepass and a skin by stream mates years ago and I haven’t paid a single cent to Fortnite.

As far as I can tell, this doesn’t have anything to do with Epic Games, the developers. Shell was paying twitch streamers directly to promote their initiative through playing Fortnite.

My nephew and his friends has been obsessed with it for a year now. He’s 9. They are still releasing seasons and skins I have to buy for him. The relatively recent Futurama ones were cool.
