Okay funny, but yeah Tesla on here kinda fucks it up because Elon is not a founder of Tesla, and he’s not visionary unless you count finding new ways to make it worthless. Elon is not visionary in any of his businesses, he just has money and pays people under him to try to make him look good. Emphasis on try

He is an asshole though, I’ll give you that

Oh, but Elon is a founder, he paid enough to retcon himself as such, so he is.

Can’t argue him being a ‘visionary’ though, unless you count ambitions that are vague enough so they are not actually actionable and obvious enough that pretty much any random person would be predicting the same thing.

Paying to say you are something doesn’t mean people need to accept it. He’s not a founder of Tesla under conventional understanding and he never will be. It’s as simple as that

      and he isn’t visionary. that’s 2 out of 3…

I’ll allow asshole but it’s still a bit too flattering for him.

I don’t think Linus Thorvalds is either very stylish or really an asshole. He might be a bit short fused, but not an asshole.

He’s definitely a bit of an asshole. I appreciate his propensity to talk shit to people, I enjoy that myself, but he equates intelligence with technical skill and tells people they just need a thicker skin if they don’t like his abuse.

Eh - I mean, I’m not an asshole all the time, but I can be occasionally. I’m also not very stylish.

      Wait…am I Linus Thorvalds? Nope.

I think he’s an asshole¹ but he’s not nearly on the same level as Elmo or any other billionaire. Between actually working and contributing, not being as hardcore exploitative capitalist, and not having nearly the same level of hoarded wealth², there’s just far less potential for assholery.

1: Mind, I still value his work, but the way he sometimes treats people reaches into asshole territory for me.
2: A superficial search suggests a net worth of $50 million. In perspective, that’s $0.05 billion, compared to the late Jobs’ $10.8 billion (0.5%) or Musk’s ~$400 billion (0.01%)

He’s short fused with volunteers who are donating time to his project, which makes him an asshole.

The kernel group is not your next corner charity and it’s members are highly qualified devs - all of them knowing where they are and the majority paid very well for their work by their employers. Also, it’s not that Thorvalds ever arbitrarily picked on someone or kept on picking on anyone because of personal antipathy as assholes use to do. Any of these events was caused by a specific fuckup by the very person that got addresses and they all did the same thing (fuck up, refuse to fix,. let someone else take the resulting damage) they were explicitely warned not to do. I do have quite a lot of understanding for individual fuckups - they just happen under the right combination of shitty circumstances but I’d be the last one to complain if I’d get F-bombed if I’d be the one to blame. Interestingly none of the addressants complained either. It’s always been third parties/media to scandalize these for their own reasons.

I would have figured the three Linuses would have been like:

    1. Enthusiastic loud mouthed young Linus arguing with Tannenbaum.

    2. Aggressive Linus with no filter at all slapping maintainers upside the head.

    3. Aggressive Elder Linus with a personal insult filter applied still slapping maintainers upside the head.

Is there any evidence that he’s ever done anything to try to hide it? I’ve only ever seen that claim as an engagement-bait caption on the photo itself, to coax people into sharing it.

There’s never any details of exactly what steps he’s taken to erase it from the internet, and in fact when I searched it just now one of the top results shows that he literally retweeted the photo himself. I mean, fuck Musk and all, but also fuck clickbait.

To be fair, none of this would have happened without Stallman, and I understand the criticism. But let’s remember, there are things that he did that were very positive for computing. If it weren’t for Stallman it is doubtful that we would have a free operating system to this day.

I see it the same way you might give a loved one an occasional ribbing for something they have an ongoing hangup about, or even once yelled about several years ago.

It sucks for him and his recognition that “Linux” is such a good name that people use it for the entire OS. But the dude is basically still a hero. Anybody who helped really get the FOSS/GNU/Linux movement going is. We have a huge amount of the tech world that runs so well on free and open software, plus it’s well beyond the critical mass where it isn’t going anywhere and will be an option permanently (barring some event that also, you know, ends civilization).

There is a quote from a TV programme called “firefly” which I like.

“It’s my estimation that every man ever got a statue made of him was one kind of a son of a bitch or another. Ain’t about you. It’s about what they need.”

            Quite fitting, wouldn’t you say?

The criticism is pretty ridiculous. I can’t stand Stallman’s prescriptivist takes on language, but he was and is always right about the naming. I remember the people who insisted that it’s because the kernel was the most important part immediately called it Android and not Linux, then made a bunch of excuses.

Just be honest and don’t hide behind “I don’t use GNU so there!” kind of obnoxious stupidity. We say Linux because it stuck, not because the kernel is more important. Saying GNU or GNU/Linux or whatever was always a reasonable request that people rejected because they were either just too used to Linux or were actively worthless scumbag dumbfucks.

If Stallman had his way, the entire Linux ecosystem would be in the same state as GNU Hurd. His vision, work, and activism in the days of Unix was a massive benefit to free software at large, probably forever. Now he thinks Debian isn’t free enough because it offers an optional nonfree repository.

You all don’t know what you’re talking about. Elon absolutely is a visionary. Who else could come up with the new Tesla Roadster with rocket thruster package (source)? Now, actually brining that vision to market, yeah Elon might not be your guy. Now that I think about it, his visions are more like delusions. Maybe let’s call him a delusionary.

Also gonna put this here if you would like to read more of his delusions. https://elonmusk.today/

Shouldn’t the last Linux image be, like, a crowd of FOSS developers?

Also, the second image should be a penguin in a tuxedo.
