Over a million people joined Bluesky after the election and seem to be using it. Also a lot of news & media companies have moved over too. So I would assume that at least that many users have disappeared from X or their activity has diminished. On top of that all the bots have gone home now the election is over so the amount of activity must have suffered. And Bluesky is basically old Twitter so people are settling into it and liking it.

I would advise anyone who still using X to give it a try. And if they want to use X for whatever reason - uninstall the app, install Control Panel for Twitter into their mobile browser and browse that for a relatively bullshit free experience - no ads, no algorithmic lists, just what you subscribe to.

If you don’t use Twitter then I don’t see any reason to try Bluesky since it could basically be described as classic Twitter. But if you liked Twitter until it because a cesspit of far right shitheads, crypto bros, bots, and ads then give Bluesky a go.

Yup just tried it again. Also basically anything counts as a view, scroll by the post, embedded tweet, scraper scraping the tweet. Almost every time the page is viewed by anyone or anything will bump the number even if it’s repeated visit from the same viewer withing short time frame.

I guess it’s kinda nice that it’s simply transparent like that for admins but that’s not what users expect - it’s a useless metric and very easy to inflate.

I’m tempted to fire up a dozen android emulators with a refresh loop to see how far this can be pushed but I really don’t want to have that shit platform on my mind longer than I have to tbh.

I never really understood twitter. Feels to me like it’s all about following personalities in a poor format that doesn’t cater to discussion. I’ve had an account since early, mostly for testing twitter integrations for work. I haven’t even bothered to log in for a couple of years.

I logged in yesterday just to deactivate my account.

I made a Twitter account in the early days when I was a teenager. The sole reason I made it was because one of my favorite bands had an account. Their posts would be sent in an SMS to my phone, and the cool thing about that was how it felt like they were texting me personally.

I have no idea when I last logged in, let alone when I last posted. When the SMS feature was dropped, so did my interest.

He’s not the richest in history. Modern history, sure if you count excluding inflation. But when people like Mansa Musa existed Musk has quite a ways to go. Hell even Carnegie’s wealth eclipsed Musk if you’re talking purchasing power.

Musk has now surpassed Carnegie. You are right about Mansa Musa (for now), but the gap is closing. According to google today, Musk is at $334B, Carnegie peaked at a modest $309B, and Mansa Musa had about $400B, though there are quibbles about personal wealth vs. kingdom’s treasury. If you want to compare Musk and Musa, I think you could reasonably add the GDP of the US to Musk’s fortune, since he is one of the puppeteers behind Trump. All figures adjusted for inflation, by the way.

To hear it told on Bluesky, it’s the better blocking tools and the culture of “we don’t have to put up with these assholes.”

          shrug

I’ve been off Twitter for years and even before that I probably posted less than a half-dozen times per year. I mostly prefer subject-based social media (here) over identity-based, but I’m looking to surround myself with people who talk about something other than politics because the last Trump presidency I just couldn’t handle the constant tide of horrors.

I just need somewhere to escape all that and if not, I’m going to be in a really mentally unhealthy place for the next four years.

I like subject vs identity because I enjoy discussing issues and I enjoy seeing familiar people in the discussions, but I don’t like being followed and following is hard for me. I might love your thoughts on Star Wars but you also post a lot of cat pictures which I’m neutral about and sports which I don’t like.

So if I follow you and see those three subjects, two posts I have to cognitively tune out. If I follow a Star Wars board, I get your thoughts and potentially two other people’s thoughts in those same three posts.

I like that. On Bluesky (or TwX/Mastodon) I have to find people who mostly post about things I want to see. It’s hard and it’s not conducive to massive follow/follower counts which is normally the measure of success.

I also find myself feeling constrained to only post things my followers are interested in, because as an individual I’m just not that fascinating. So I post less and less as my follower count goes up.

Because of all that, subject vs identity is the most natural way to divide up social media to me. I’d be happy to brainstorm other ways, though.

I disagree that him owning Twitter causes Trump to win. I have not heard any credible source make this claim. This sounds like 4D chess nonsense. He clearly did not want to own Twitter and didn’t know what to do with it either once he did and still had no clue how to use it.

Whatever responsibility can be placed on Twitter it would be them deplatforming him, allowing voters to forget how insane he is. This occurred prior to his purchase.

Rather than attempting to lay the blame for trumps second election on platforms, we need to come to terms with accepting that this is the direction that the majority of American’s wanted. This includes those who did not vote, since their apathy allowed Trump to win.

A plurality of Americans are very very dumb. The entire world knows this. We pretend they just don’t get us, know us, etc but we cannot ignore the reality exposed by these election outcomes.

A bunch of billionaires owning consolidated media, what could go wrong?!

Trust me. Whether we can prove it or not, the whole purpose of buying Twitter was to kneecap the “left” in organizing (sorry but most are actually liberals, especially the PMC echo chamber that was Twitter and is now becoming Bluesky), push nazi content, and sway the election. Supposedly he’s going after the UK election too but I’ll be honest I haven’t been paying attention to that. A whole bunch of major democracies had elections this year. Not to mention I’m sure his tax cuts and deregulations will offset loses for buying X. Throw in gutting NASA, he opens more contracts for his companies. He will end up making money for sure.

He could do absolutely nothing but sit on the beach for the rest of his life and he’d be making more money off interest than we make in a lifetime

Assuming he lives to 88. And gets only 5% interest on his current money. Interest puts him over 1 trillion easy (around 1.8t) So assuming there are 450,000 users on Lemmy and we all make 3,000,000 dollars in our total lives… Yeah he will make about 1.5 times what me all make.

Sidenote: average stock market growth over 10 years has been around 11% I saw. So that would put his worth around 8.9 trillion in 35 years of just sitting on investments.

Great number choice haha. The fascists love the number 88!

It really goes to show how fucking nuts these billionaires are. They could fucking relax for the rest of their lives in luxury but that’s not enough for them.

Money is just a symbol for power. There’s never enough for these ghouls.
