Will talk about Linux, plants, space, retro games, and anything else I find interesting.
Also mesa@piefed.social over on Piefed.

Might be why they want to deport people so much. Their wealth isn’t going to seize itself.
South park had a great episode on it.
yep.
The MITRE Corporation came within a hair’s breadth of running out of its contract to maintain the CVE database
That would have been very bad.
The population wants to become more independent from those big companies and what are we doing!? I hate it!!!
So true. Some people use tech for independence, wanting a better tool for a job. But some just want to get the most $$ for the least amount of work. Like I get it, it takes the work/thinking away from the job…but holy molly does the tech need to mature. Most of the time, it actually creates subpar solutions that need to be cleaned up later. Your basically giving these companies money who absolutely want to pull your source code as a data-point for even more $$. Its the perfect scam.
Android Studio is a funny one to put AI on. Ive used it with expo in the past. They are going to have fun with that since LLMs typically dont do very well with new libraries and Android is almost always changing in big ways. GL!
Only a tiny tiny fraction actually has a grasp on it for a legit usecase.
Agreed. I used bitcoin a couple years after it came out to buy strawberries and coffee. That was when you could run your own wallet on your phone. Such an awesome feeling without using credit cards. Then there was the huge deluge of people that didnt understand that, yes, you do have to pay taxes on your gains. And yes the IRS actually loves a system where that transaction will ALWAYS be within the blockchain lol. And then they started using it for illegal stuff and I bounced.
Its surreal, developers think they are immune to stupid bandwagonning when they are usually the cause of it. Talking from lemmy of course ;)
The name is terrible too :).
I do software dev all the time. LLMs can help…but in a VERY limited space. and even worse they make you lazy when you trust them.
But the biggest issue, which you touched on is that devs become beholden to corporate overlords (AI bros) like openai for $$ because of the token limit. You can run local models to get around it, but in order to LLMs to do anything remotely useful, you need that power of cloud computing.
Reminds me heavily on bitcoin and cryptocurrency. Its a solid design for a tech but the people that it attracts…yesh.
I had to get a new number a couple of years ago. That “fixed” the issue for a long while.
I was able to get some cheap numbers on VOIP so now I give those out to businesses that require a phone number, so that I can kill them if the spam calls start up again. It helps quite a bit. I know some people also use Google Voice to emulate what im talking about.
Honestly, most people dont even call me anymore, they just txt or video call.
How many people do you want on it? If not so many manual registration might be the way.
I think of it as the internet coming to you rather than you going to it.
You subscribe to updates on a website and it intelligently pulls new content/articles. Its pretty neat! Lots of clients such as Outlook/Thunderbird have built in rss support and lots of websites provide them.
Here is one such software Tiny Tiny RSS that I self host (but most dont self host from what I understand).

Yep take a look, theres quite a few examples, but they use Github Actions, CircleCI, Gitlab etc… etc…
Most CI/CD that use the above-ish model will use the same kinda scripts (bash or otherwise). Basically if you can do it on your desptop, you can automate it on a server. Make it work first, then try to make it better.
Most of the time, ill throw my Docker/Docker Compose (and/or terraform if need be) on the root of the repo and do the same steps I do on the development side for building/testing on the CI side. Then switch over to CD with either a new machine (docker build/ compose) or throw it all on a new server. At that point, if you script it out correctly, it doesnt really matter what kind of server you use for CI/CD, since they are all linux boxes at the end of the day.
You can also mix it up by using bare metal, docker alternatives, different password managers, QA tools, linters, etc…etc…
But virtualization will get you quite far. In my opinion start with just trying to get the project to build on another server via a script from scratch, then transfer it over to the CI. Then go with testing/deployment.
GL!
I really dont like vibe coding (the term or the concept) but I do recognize its a thing that is happening. So its better to tackle it head on and create a discussion rather than trying to bury it.
Yep we do that at work-ish. Ci/CD is really good.
Thanks!
I use it for coding templates. Like build a basic mvc crud then I’ll fill in the blanks.
None of the models are very good at the whole picture, but they save me time. I’ve tried to do more but it just lies about libraries that dont exist.
It will never happen but Vainqueur the Dragon has some very funny moments.
I use popos because I own a system 76 and it’s what I’m used to.
That would explain why the rss was acting up! Thanks for the heads up.
It’s not easy to upgrade from php5.5 to modern day to say the least. It will take a huge effort definitely since the code was all maintained by the old owner, at least that’s what I got out of the video.
If you dont mind, can you add https://piped.chrisco.me/c/teddy_the_dog/videos family dog doing dog things on Animals?
