I grew up with classmates named Autumn, April, and December (she went by DeeDee). I had a co-worker named June. I’ve known of kids named Summer, January, Augustus, and September. But none of them picked these names; it was the parents who identified them as months or seasons!

(And yes obviously the Fox story is beyond stupid)

“I feel more masculine in the summertime. I wear more masculine clothing, I wear shorts. I normally have my hair up more and I just feel more ‘boy’, whereas in the winter – for some reason – girl mode comes out and I’m loving skirts and dresses and having my hair down.”

This is from a video that the Fox story is about. Fox totally missed the point, I’m guessing intentionally so.

But can we talk about that statement for a second? (I’m leftist af and I strongly believe trans people should be able to do whatever the fuck they want, just like everybody else; this has nothing to do with that.) I’m having a hard time accepting this statement.

I would obviously never support the misogynistic belief that women should (only) wear skirts/dresses. But as it turns out, the idea that dresses and long hair are inherently feminine (or that shorts and short hair are inherently masculine) also makes me uncomfortable. I recognize that a lot of people see it that way, but I don’t think that makes it right, or a belief that should continue to propagate.

I’m a dude, and I hope to see a day where I can grow out my hair and wear a dress without people assuming it means anything about me beyond that I like dresses and long hair.

(Please let me know if this is insensitive and I will remove my comment. I’m not interested in starting an unproductive or hateful discussion here)

This sounds like a person who’s non-binary and trying to explain it to someone who isn’t.

Unfortunately fox news doesn’t want to understand. They want to mock and bulky.

Are you responding to me, or just the story in general? I basically agree with you entirely and don’t have much to add to what you just said.

Well, except that long hair and long skirt-like clothing items were worn by men for hundreds of years; look at almost any painting from the middle ages lol

People working at Fox News are probably still taking/passing around Buzzfeed quizzes to find out which season they are

Why the fuck would people even have a problem with that? The lead poisoned generation which believes in jesus the crucified zombie telling everyone that THEY have a mental illness. I just wish conservatives would disappear.

Probably stumbled on a makeup tutorial and got confused hearing someone being called an “Autumn” or “Winter” and ran with it.

Summer and Autumn get used as girl’s names ~1,200 per million and ~2,000 per million per year since the 1970s or so. “Fall” is only about 3 per million, “Winter” takes off with Game of Thrones TV show around 2011 leading to 600 per million, but was in use since the 70s to the tune of about 70-100 per mil.

Don’t forget all the kids named after months.

January Jones was a famous actress for a minute. November Kelly is a popular podcaster. April, May, and June are all common girl’s names.

Parents have been identifying their kids as seasons for decades.

Try millennia. You can find people named after months and seasons going back to antiquity. Hell, many of the months/seasons themselves were originally the names of ancient mythological gods and heroes.

Ah, missed that one. Thanks for pointing that out.

Looks like ~20 per mil for most every decade except a jump from the late ‘60s to late ‘70s peaking at about 180 per mil. Perhaps a byproduct of the flower power/ hippy movement in the ‘60s?

Oh my god, so what if they were? Why do they care? Let people be who they want to be. If you tell me, “I’m not a woman, I’m an autumn,” I might think that’s silly, but if that’s what you want me to call you, fine. It doesn’t hurt anyone, it doesn’t exploit anyone, there’s no harm in it at all.

I’d love to know if anyone who actually cares about this feels similarly about horoscopes or Meyers-Briggs assessments, two other completely fabricated ways of classifying people.

My Trumper father used to complain about things like choosing your gender being made up. It’s all made up, dad! We literally make everything up, just some dipshits gatekeep what make believe is acceptable or not.

Was it ever really common, though? I grew up in a pretty conservative state and the only people who received common courtesy are those who were in the in group, specifically white, heterosexual, social norm abiding Christians. I happened to either not be one of those or questionable as to which I belonged, so I wasn’t the recipient of common courtesy until I moved somewhere more progressive.

Even taking it at face value, who cares?

Kids do dumb shit. Always have, always will.

If identifying as seasons gets the creative juices flowing or gives them a harmless source of entertainment, then more power to em.
