She never asked him to save her, she never took advantage of his money, she raised young Forrest alone until just before she died. She had a fucked up life starting with her physically and sexually abusive dad and took until just before she died to find peace.

Actually, she did have HIV in the movie, the screenwriter confirmed it a few years ago. She did have hep-c in the book though.
