A couple of weeks ago a grocery store I frequent had an internet outage. This meant their payment systems were down, as well as the self-checkout and things like that. I don’t know why they don’t have redundant internet services, that should be a no brainer, but probably their internet is usually good enough to prevent that sort of thing. This left the store in total chaos, with people just abandoning carts and piles of stuff when the outage took more than a few minutes.
I just ran in the store to get some snacks on my way home from work. I saw the sign posted the self-checkout was down, but hadn’t realized their payment systems were also down. So when I stood in line at the regular checkout, an employee shouted out the payment system was down, which lead to a lot of people shouting boo and walking away.
But I had a secret ace up my sleeve, I keep a couple of bills for such situations in a pocket of my bag. So I was helped almost right away, gave the man my magic paper and he gave me back some coin. I looked confused at the change, threw it in my bag and I still have no idea what to do with it. I used to have some coins in a drawer, to give to charity when they did the rounds. But these days I digitally pay those as well and they have moved away from collecting coins to just spreading information and giving flyers so you can get a charity subscription of sorts instead.
I then had to replace those bills I used, for the next time I need them maybe 10 years from now. I had to pay an extra charge to my bank to withdraw physical money, as my package doesn’t cover that since I never use it.
I can’t remember the last time I handled paper currency
That’s because you were high on cocaine.
You’re not from Germany then. We love our Bargeld so much that we feel helpless without trace amounts of currency in our wallets.
Yes, but mostly because there are still shops and restaurants who only accept cash
I said paper currency, not currency! I’ve handled plenty of cash, it’s just not made of paper
I see, you used Romanian Leu, which is made of plastic! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banknotes_of_the_Romanian_leu#Banknotes_of_the_fourth_leu_(RON)
Australian dollars are also plastic
Must not work POS, cash is flowing like mad all the time. Cards are more prevalent now but cash is still king
Plenty of cash, it’s just not made of paper!
Ahh you must be from a somewhat sane part of the world…
US money is made from mostly cotton. Thanks to Inside Man with Denzel and Clive for making me remember this bit of trivia.
Such a good movie. I should watch it again soon.

I was referring to the money being made of paper
