I haven’t banned anyone, and as far as I know none of the other users on my instance currently have moderation privileges. So why am I seeing two users in a “banned” list when I visit my instance settings page? What horrible, unforgivable things did these users have to do for my instance to ban them seemingly of its own accord…?
(I have manually unbanned these users since taking the screenshot, since I didn’t see any reason why they should have been banned in the first place.)
It seems like if a user gets banned on their own instance, they show up on this list for everyone (I also see them on my ban list here), so unbanning them on your end probably does nothing.
Seems like just a bug, I think this list should only show local users who are banned, and instead it shows every ban it knows about across the fediverse.
Its not a bug but the mod log could use better filtering.
Nah, I believe it’s just that a user that registered with lemmy.ml originally and is then banned in lemmy.ml can’t interact with anyone. The instance basically stops supporting that user. That’s kinda important, because an instance is in some ways responsible for their users.
If an instance gets a whole lot of brigading from users from a given instance, then they might consider blocking that instance. An instance blocking its own user is taking away their ability to represent that instance on any level.
They can obviously still go registered with another instance.
Right, I agree that that’s weird UX. It’s probably down to the way the federation works. I just wanted to clarify so that people didn’t think that one instance has the power to ban users from accessing other instances.
I’ll check the Lemmy issue tracker and submit an issue if one doesn’t exist. There’s some adjustment that has to happen there.
Nice username by the way

I mean, the users have remained unbanned, at least as far as my own instance’s settings go. The list is empty since I unbanned each user after a look at their seemingly benign history. But I guess that if they are banned on the instance they registered on, then they probably aren’t able to interact with any federated instances in any case?
Right, it doesn’t really matter if you unban them if their home instance is the one that banned them in the first place 👍
You should make a community called “pizza” on your instance.
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha, I sure never heard that one before
I have come across this too. It almost seems to federate out bans if they are banned on their own instance as mentioned here already
If they are banned on their home instance, then are they banned everywhere? Does it work like an email address, where if your hosting server (Gmail for instance) bans your email address, then you can no longer send or recieve emails?
So if your home lemmy server bans you, then how could you ever post anywhere else?
