As a sync user of a few years, it’s important that we don’t bring down other apps while raising our own up. It’s a good thing there’s healthy competition! Sync is great, but that doesn’t mean that other apps aren’t.
It doesn’t cost money, you could just pay to remove ads. Unless you want all the super fancy features with premium. I bought sync for reddit years ago but I’m sticking with the regular non-premium with Lemmy.
Sync isn’t polished for lemmy yet, so yeah, there are a few rough edges. Having said that, usually a bad experience is because you didn’t customize it to your liking. There is likely a setting for any UI gripe you may have had. There is even a search feature for setting because it’s so customizable.
I think a lot of the love for it is that sync was arguably the best android Reddit app for a long time. People like myself have become very comfortable with sync on Reddit, and sync for Lemmy is basically the same thing we are all so comfortable with.
I looked at some of the other alternatives and they just didn’t feel as good to me, but I have also been using sync almost daily for years.
While I agree, I think sync takes the award for most non intrusive ads in an app. I don’t think I’ve seen a free ad supported app with less intrusive ads.
I’ve heard that argument before too – but again, no other Lemmy app uses ads. Having them is pretty damn intrusive when the alternative is simply not having them.
Of course, it’s the dev’s prerogative to sell a closed-source product, and their choice to be paid for it. I support that. But the issue gets deeper since Lemmy is ultimately FOSS. Lemmy needs donations to survive. I’d wager that most folks who paid to remove ads from Sync aren’t paying their instance for their bandwidth, so it ends up being an unnecessary stumbling block for the platform.
I’m all for paying devs for their work, but I am still finding the pricing for the lemmy version of sync just too high. The ad free purchase is 4 times more than it was for the reddit app. And I get that there are probably less users so he needs to make up the difference, but there’s also way less content on lemmy than there was on Reddit, impacting the value there in my opinion.
Oh I never even realized that was missing. I haven’t enabled it in any apps though. I just see the "unread replies” dot on the inbox when I open the app.

The ads on sync really aren’t that annoying at all.

Can you tell me about your experience with ads on sync? Where did you see them, how often did you see them?

I’m liking sync, but would like it to be free software
This is why Sync mentions get downvoted a lot. Other options have most or all of its features, but none bring ads to Lemmy.
I’d argue that most of the userbase would rather not normalize ads on Lemmy.

Sync isn’t on iPhone. I wish Apollo was adapted for Lemmy
That’s basically Voyager (formerly wefwef) https://apps.apple.com/ca/app/voyager-for-lemmy/id6451429762
It’s great, only missing some small features from Apollo.
I know I have pretty much every Lemmy iOS app on my phone.
Voyager is pretty close. That’s probably why it is ranked so high.
No iOS notifications is a deal breaker for me…
