Voyager is fantastic. I started with Memmy and settled on Voyager for a while. But I’m trying Avelon right now and it’s smoooooth. The swipe back function works much better on Avelon, and their “Explore” tab is great.
Team Avelon
Oooh, shiny. Thanks for the suggestion, it’s beautiful
Adding my thanks for the suggestion too - avelon looks great! I started with Memmy and I moved on to Voyager and Lemmios. Both are great but both have problems. Loving avelon so far!!
Avelon is phenomenal. Especially the hide bars on scroll feature. No other app has this. I wonder if it’s hard to develop? I remember the developer of Apollo had quite a few bugs with it in the beginning.
At least on iOS, I prefer Avelon the best as it’s the most iOS native feeling app. A close second for me on iOS is Mlem. Both I still use from their betas, but both are now in the App Store as well, go give them a try if anyone hasn’t already!
maybe its a settings thing but for me voyager keeps showing me posts i’ve already seen even they should be marked as read, while avelon keeps showing me new stuff. otherwise they are both wonderful.
I like the fact that no client has a majority
You could argue that 25% for sync is quite something, and almost double that of the next largest competitor.
I am using it, it’s okay, not as good as Reddit Is Fun was.
but I have to say I am not as evangelical about pushing open source and lack of telemetry, so I don’t care about unintrusive ads as a free-tier, nor do I care a lot about collecting usage data to improve the app
Try liftoff, it’s as close as possible to RIF.
Hm, I like it way more than RiF.
This can be blessing and a curse.
This made me so happy to see people talking about my poll! This is exactly why I wanted to make it! :)
This reminded me of high quality gifs sub (I don’t remember the exact name)
i think it’s actually just “r/HighQualityGifs”

Good alternatives are always needed, though! I love Sync, but then I am also not sure it would be as good as it is today if it wasn’t compelled to stay competitive with RIF, Baconreader, Apollo (to a lesser extent) and the dozen other Reddit apps that used to be out there (F in the chat).
Eternity, clean UI no ads/pay wall and fast
Especially hard to stop an app when mods get banned for criticizing it.
It’s nice to see the Reddit tradition still alive. Where you post something out of context to make sure your agenda is pushed.
It’s Scientology, question it or the leader and get hounded.
🤡
I wish the Apollo dev would’ve ported his app and migrated his user base. IMHO, Syncs popularity shows that the developer was able to migrate a lot of their old user base to Lemmy.

Yeah, that was clutch. Voyager, which is basically a total Apollo clone, never got that same level of visibility.
Iirc he added an announcement that he’d be moving to lemmy before the shutdown.
I’m waiting for Boost since the reddit exodus. I’ve condemned myself to mobile browsing particularly to be loyal to boost and also the enjoy how much better 3rd party clients are when it’s finally live.
I’m also a former boost user, for now I’m using liftoff
Is Voyager worth it? I don’t mind Jerboa
I use Voyager PWA myself it’s pretty good
I like both, and I say use what you’re comfortable with.
Eh, Jerboa is okay, but the typing is janky. I might switch away from it just for that reason.
Have been loving Sync Ultra since release. Recently added Summary feature and link previews are awesome.
What is link preview? Coz that was always a feature no? Or am I misunderstanding?

As a sync user of a few years, it’s important that we don’t bring down other apps while raising our own up. It’s a good thing there’s healthy competition! Sync is great, but that doesn’t mean that other apps aren’t.

It doesn’t cost money, you could just pay to remove ads. Unless you want all the super fancy features with premium. I bought sync for reddit years ago but I’m sticking with the regular non-premium with Lemmy.

The ads on sync really aren’t that annoying at all.

Can you tell me about your experience with ads on sync? Where did you see them, how often did you see them?

Sync isn’t polished for lemmy yet, so yeah, there are a few rough edges. Having said that, usually a bad experience is because you didn’t customize it to your liking. There is likely a setting for any UI gripe you may have had. There is even a search feature for setting because it’s so customizable.
I think a lot of the love for it is that sync was arguably the best android Reddit app for a long time. People like myself have become very comfortable with sync on Reddit, and sync for Lemmy is basically the same thing we are all so comfortable with.
I looked at some of the other alternatives and they just didn’t feel as good to me, but I have also been using sync almost daily for years.
I’m liking sync, but would like it to be free software
This is why Sync mentions get downvoted a lot. Other options have most or all of its features, but none bring ads to Lemmy.
I’d argue that most of the userbase would rather not normalize ads on Lemmy.
While I agree, I think sync takes the award for most non intrusive ads in an app. I don’t think I’ve seen a free ad supported app with less intrusive ads.
I’ve heard that argument before too – but again, no other Lemmy app uses ads. Having them is pretty damn intrusive when the alternative is simply not having them.
Of course, it’s the dev’s prerogative to sell a closed-source product, and their choice to be paid for it. I support that. But the issue gets deeper since Lemmy is ultimately FOSS. Lemmy needs donations to survive. I’d wager that most folks who paid to remove ads from Sync aren’t paying their instance for their bandwidth, so it ends up being an unnecessary stumbling block for the platform.
I’m all for paying devs for their work, but I am still finding the pricing for the lemmy version of sync just too high. The ad free purchase is 4 times more than it was for the reddit app. And I get that there are probably less users so he needs to make up the difference, but there’s also way less content on lemmy than there was on Reddit, impacting the value there in my opinion.
Sync isn’t on iPhone. I wish Apollo was adapted for Lemmy
That’s basically Voyager (formerly wefwef) https://apps.apple.com/ca/app/voyager-for-lemmy/id6451429762
It’s great, only missing some small features from Apollo.
I know I have pretty much every Lemmy iOS app on my phone.
Voyager is pretty close. That’s probably why it is ranked so high.
No iOS notifications is a deal breaker for me…
Oh I never even realized that was missing. I haven’t enabled it in any apps though. I just see the "unread replies” dot on the inbox when I open the app.
Avelon users, unite!
here, here!
I went back to using Jerboa since I got pretty tired of the ads in Sync. I understand why they’re there, but it’s still kinda annoying.
The $20 to go ad free was worth it to me 🤷🏽 Sync is just too good
I’ve got an adblocker
Does it completely remove it or leave a filler space with it showing a visibly blocked ad?
At least for me, they’re gone completely.
I can’t remember ever having even seen even the outline/layout of the place where ads were supposed to be.
Still a filler space for me with Adguard DNS but it doesn’t bother me at all.
I find the amount of features and having different settings per account overwhelming, that’s just my opinion though. I’m sure the dev put a ton of hard work into it.
You can backup your settings on one account and restore them under any other accounts you sign in to easily keep the experience consistent.
Where are the ads? I’ve not seen one, and I don’t have any ad blockers enabled…
I’m using sync until boost comes out
any updates on boost? I’ve been ootl for a while
Nope not that I’ve seen. I’m pre registered on the Play store and just waiting for a notification
I would like to see how this poll was shared because that could introduce bias for example sharing it in communities where users of a specific lemmy client are in the majority
I used memmy and was happy with it but my blocked instance filter kept disappearing, so now I’m on voyager. It’s not bad but it takes time to get used to it.
I tried Voyager, but just couldn’t get over the inverted vote colors. Couldn’t find a theme that had it “right”.
Imagines load with poor resolution in Voyager for me. I dunno why. I love it otherwise.
I’ve been enjoying connect
I’d use it but I can’t log in. My password is probably too long as it’s randomly generated by my password manager.
Fwiw can’t login to sync either. It’s all jerboa for me.
I always wondered why I couldn’t log in using Voyager either. I also use an auto generated password from my password manager, could be related to lengths or a certain special character.
Shortened my password, works now in Boost for Lemmy
I also had problems logging in with sync. For me, it was the instance input.
Somehow, after i filled out the instance, username & password inputs, the form blanked the instance name when submitting.
I didn’t notice at first.
Entering the instance name again made it work.
My password is >!long!< too, but idk if it’s as long as yours
Just had the same problem with Boost for Lemmy so I shortened it and it works now (at least in Lemmy)
