The liberal won the election in Romania
Please. The Western European, anti-immigrant voting slavs have nothing on our North American balcanic compatriots. We vote right in record proportions! For example the Canadian Bulgarians voted twice harder for the Revival party.
eli5?
Diaspora, while benefiting from free movement and pluralusm, often feel like they’re losing their identity. In turn, they seek to symbolically reassert this identity by remote-voting for the most far-right maniac they can find. The fact that such a maniac would never have let them in, and will ruin the country, doesn’t bother them as they don’t live there anymore.
Filipinos included, oh and Turks.
Turks are probably the worst, imagine living in Germany and then voting for Erdogan, that’s a different kind of hatred for your own people
A lot of turks living in Germany are(or descended from) poor, uneducated, turkish farmers who were imported to Germany many decades ago, as cheap labour, when Germany needed workers.
Not all immigrants(turkish or otherwise) are like that.
But, is there a method to the madness? Or are they just assholes? Are they voting the biggest idiot because they dont live there and want to watch their country burn (assholes) or do they somehow benefit here?
Thet benefit by feeling closer to (what they imagine is) their culture. We’re talking about people who left for some quick cash and ended up spending 30, 40 years there. They have a daughter that’s born there, grew up there, and never lived outside of there, and they worry she’ll be sad when she has to break up with her boyfriend “when we all move back home”. They feel like they’re separated from their nation because they are, and psychologically deny this by voting for someone so rabidly and loudly nationalist they can hear him all the way in Frankfurt.
It’s similar to folks from, idk, Boston, who will occasionally vacation in Ireland and conclude “they’re not Irish at all over there, they don’t even paint rivers green on St. Patty’s!”
A lot of them have family living in the country that they are supporting with money
you know having uneducated right wing extremists is not exclusive to america. Every country has idiots. The educated, normal immigrants don’t vote far right and tend to not be mentioned in any news.
It’s a misconception/misrepresentation that they are more uneducated or idiotic than average. They may look like it (or the media make them so), but actual idiots wouldn’t be as capable as they are to push their agenda forward.
they also tend to learn language and integrate more easily, because, you know, they aren’t far right lunatics
strange
They are playing 4D chess: Dumbass, Disturbed, Duped, and Derpy are the four Ds.
I have friends who immigrated to the Netherlands and then complained that “all these emigrants ruined the Netherlands”… I was blown away…
Western expats in Japan are notorious for hating every other Western expat in Japan. It’s even got a name, “My Japan Syndrome”.
Very common to hear this. I’ve heard family that were complaining that male only, illegal immigrants are moving in to steal jobs, when they were exactly in the same situation, just on the other side, some 20 years ago. It honestly shakes my hope in humanity.
Same in Canada.
Is your friend white while complaining about non-white emigrants?
Well that depends on who you ask of course, white is not a constant, but if you ask them, yes.
They aren’t anti-immigration, they’re racist.
If a racist says you’re not white, they’ll kill you over your protests. They may even pretend to think you’re white up until you’re useless to them.
How did you know?!?!? \s
I’m a descendant of immigrants in the Netherlands and there is definitely a small subset of 2nd and 3rd gen immigrants who is ruining it for all immigrants. PVV would have never been voted in as the biggest party if the parents (who never bothered to integrate and to learn the language) of these trouble making 2nd/3rd gen migrants weren’t given permanent residency.
30 years ago people who pointed out the problems these non integrated migrants could cause in the future were labeled racists by the left wing parties at the time, even though the leader of the socialist party warned about this. The labor party who was in power at the time also didn’t bother to tackle this issue, since they relied on the immigrant vote. And now since the Muslims started their own center right conservative party, labor lost a big voting block and the fascists are in power because people have had it with the inaction of the labor party.
Same thing is happening with the refugees. The illegals who have zero chance to get a refugee status and who are committing crimes have soured people’s attitudes towards the real refugees. Towns that were once welcoming towards refugees want to see the refugee center in their town gone.
Same thing is happening with the refugees.
Yes they are being used as a straw man to scare and polarize people.
The illegals who have zero chance to get a refugee status and who are committing crimes have soured people’s attitudes towards the real refugees.
And it is working.
Are you familiar with the situation in the Netherlands? Because points OP raises are not really polarizing in the Netherlands. Maybe you’re for example misunderstanding the phrase ‘The illegals who have zero chance to get a refugee status’ because some parts got lost in translation ?
I live in Denmark, I’m a “non-EU” person, but I’m here based on my skilled work. I do stuff, I am useful. So I have nothing against immigration in general, only against the part of immigration walking around malls in their slippers at 1 p.m., because they still haven’t spent all the money they got by faking disability.
This is a good time to remind everyone that not all disabilities are visible.
Also that personality disorders look “normal” when societies encourage, promote, and reward personality disorders.
How do you know they fake disability?
How do we know you are not faking being skilled?
Moreover: even if they were disabled: does that somehow forbid them from buying things at the mall? Would it be different if they had different footwear? Are disability payments even enough for them to be able to afford to spend on frivolous things? Even if they are, is being disabled a good reason to forbid someone from buying frivolous things? If they’re buying necessities, isn’t it nicer for everyone else if the people who have the time to do their groceries outside rush hours do so then so the registers are less crowded?
It’s just there are two distinct froups of people outside during the working hours: the slipper guys, and pensioners
And also just maybe the people that don’t work 9-5. You realize that right? Or does everyone in your country stop working at 5pm?
I sometimes wondered if the factories used by Xiaomi (and those used by their target audience) shut down at night, as their early Mi Bands didn’t permit night shift configurations.
Yeah seriously. Whenever I do a late or a night shift, this guy will think I’m a leeching immigrant. Or maybe he won’t, because my skin isn’t the right color for that?
Besides, I’m from the Netherlands and I’ve known more native “leechers” than immigrant ones.
I’m working, I’m delivering what I have to, and I getting paid for it. For two years at the current workplace. As it is not a charity, I’m pretty sure I would be fired otherwise.
As for the guys in slippers - I don’t know about single one of them, but you know, when you:- go out of the office and see a lot of similar-looking guys with beards, wearing tracksuits and slippers, doing fuck all, seemingly all the time, or maybe they work in shifts
- the statistic showing that the number of disabled adult middle aged “refugees” is double-digit higher that the same number for Danes
, you start thinking there could be a correlation.
Dichotomous logic is a sign of ignorant stupidity. Nothing about real disability is binary. Such a view is as murderous in the real world as were Nazi SS working in a concentration camp.
I would know. I am physically disabled, appear functional, but suffer far more than you could ever know. In the next decade I will die on a cold rainy night in a gutter somewhere after my folks die and I am homeless. I was killed 11 years ago, but I get to die slowly for 2 decades. I did nothing wrong. I just rode a bicycle to work and encountered a very stupid person driving into another at an unfortunate time that then hit me. It only takes one bad day to be exactly where I am. If you do not care about the social safety net for people like me, you deserve to learn the hard way.
the statistic showing that the number of disabled adult middle aged “refugees” is double-digit higher that the same number for Danes
You know refugees aren’t a random sample of the population, right? Why tf wouldn’t there be more refugees from war zones, gang violence, etc with disabilities compared to some random Western European country with a population that for the most part deals with none of that? What brain trust managed to convince you that the only way to be a refugee is to like, win an Olympic sprint or something?
Why does it matter how they look? Is it because your underlying issue is racism?
One final question, you work in tech right?
I do stuff, I am useful.
So go do stuff and stop trying to control what other people do in their days off.
So basically you just like to shit on less fortunate people. Class act.
I talk shit about “not doing shit” people
Whatever you tell yourself to sleep at night. I am disgusted by your attitude.
It has nothing to do with immigration, the native citizens can do this all the same, and some probably do.
Nostalgia for being oppressed is in full force.
“Ștefan Șerban, 69, sitting on a bench with his friend Nicolae Carja, 74, said life had been better under the former Communist dictator, Nicolae Ceauşescu. “We were a rich country then,” he said. “Industry, petrol, gas, goldmines. And no debt.””
I swear to God, I feel like the global rise in far-right parties has less to do with any kind of global cabal, and more to do with the fact that Boomers everywhere are powered by nostalgia. Seems like Boomers everywhere will stop at nothing to bring back the world of their parents that they never experienced.
Just look at how much of Russia’s foreign policy is basically “damn, remember when we were the USSR?”
Not just boomers, Gen x. They’re literally more willing to believe that the earth shifted into an alternate universe before they’re willing to believe their own memory is fallible.
USSR foreign policy was basically “Damn, remember when we were an empire?”
But the world of the Boomer’s parents was ww1 into ww2. It was a pretty big deal
like all russian pensioners saying life was better under stalin since they could just move into an apartment of the people whose whole family was killed.
“They yearn for the mines”.
Except it became so expensive to run them.
Similar thing happened to the copper mines of Hungary, at one point it became so expensive to mine it was cheaper and easier to shut them off, at least temporarily. We potentially even have some gold in the same mine, it’s just allegedly so deep no current technology is able to mine them.
Same with the local closed coalmines, but with environmental concerns, and my house is sinking because of them. However, there’s way more conspiracy theory is out there about them.
I was memeing my friend, but ty for the info, it’s interesting to learn. Upvoted.
Rich? They were poor AF and everybody knew it, it was a rolling joke in the west.
They were probably very drunk in '89. Otherwise they would have remembered that the dude got clipped for using the country as his own personal bank account.
I had managed to keep myself entertained this morning and not fret about this but… yeah, nope, there you are, anxiety, I guess you didn’t go far.
Here’s hoping that a bunch of Romanians woke up a little. With how low participation typically is people could figure this out if they could get over their whole “politicians are just thieves” deal for five minutes for anything but supporting Russian nazis.
I’m gonna go see if I can get myself distracted again. Good luck to everybody voting today.
Please don’t blame the minority of a minority, majority of which can’t vote yet.
We can though. Yes it was a minority of a minority and not likely to have made a difference. I blame everyone who voted for the end of democracy, human rights, rule of law, but especially those who voted most against their own interest
Latinos and people from West Virginia. wtf did you do that for. You’re the people hurt the most, but you’re taking the rest of us down with you
You would be surprised what younger Romanians have learned of the (not English!) US lexicon.
I used to play GTA Online with one. I wonder if they’re taught the language at school, or if they just learned it from the internet.
Pro-EU centrist Nicuşor Dan was on course to become Romania’s president on Sunday, according to exit polls, leading a run-off against an ultranationalist Eurosceptic who had topped the first round and raised fears about the country’s pro-western orientation.
The live results can be checked here: https://prezenta.roaep.ro/prezidentiale18052025/pv/results/?region=total&pv-scope=total&pv-relative-max=max&pv-candidate-chart-type=bar.
While I can’t read the language, the website is done very well. Loads quickly, simple but not flashy. I’m always amazed what happens when governments just use technology for the benefit of the public.
Australia has a open source public transit tracker system, where on mobile and desktop, you can see near real-time positions of buses, trains, boats, and estimated percentages of how packed it is, and how late it is. All for free.
Loads quickly
11 seconds here after a five second wait thinking I could be a bot.
A little bit confused by the graph but it seems like he’s solidly ahead with most votes counted? So he’s secured the win?
Yes, thank god.
Hey, this guy starred in one of the only memes I’ve ever made. Neat.
Just wait until you see the results of the Polish presidential election.
Stupid fucks, go back to piss poor Romania or better yet, shove off to Russia. They remind me of the Volga-Germans who support the twat, Putin.
