In short:

A class action against police stripsearching people at music festivals is underway in NSW.

The young woman leading the class action had her experience described by a lawyer as “akin to a sexual assault”.

The lawyer also claimed that the state failed to adequately train officers on the strict rules surrounding strip searches.

Not just sexual assault, but child sexual assault. It’s abhorrent and a stain on our society that we prefer to traumatize children and abuse them, using the small chance they may do self harm while having fun. Yet, we don’t do the things proven to be effective at mitigating that risk, like pill testing at festivals,

Failure to train my ass. Those bastards are completely aware of what they are doing to these women and taking advantage of their own authority. This country would rather see these pigs kill their house pets and sexually molest their own kids before ever demanding a shred of accountability. We’ve all seen the type of shit that gets posted to bad cop no donut on the daily. The benefits to working that kind of job is bound to continue attracting more assholes.

Edit, need to back up. American here. Is this a problem in Australia too?

Yup. Not to quite the same extent as America…you’re much less likely to get shot by an Australian cop, and cops who do provably wrong as an individual (as opposed to institutional problems like the one in this story) are much more likely to get charged here. But by and large it’s exactly the same problem.

idk how you can characterise any strip search as anything but sexual assault.

Are there extreme cases where it’s justified? Maybe. But kids on train stations or music festivals ain’t it.
