The Trump administration has drafted a memo to Congress outlining its intent to end nearly all federal funding for public media, which includes NPR and PBS, according to a White House official who spoke to NPR.

The memo, which the administration plans to send to Congress when it reconvenes from recess on April 28, will open a 45-day window in which the House and Senate can either approve the rescission or allow the money to be restored.

The official, who spoke to NPR on condition of anonymity, confirmed the existence of the draft.

This isn’t just one man demanding something be done and it happens … he isn’t some God or all powerful being that snaps his fingers

It’s happening because an entire community of professionals, politicians, leaders, organizers and supporters all want it to happen.

Turns out the “deep state” is real, but it purposefully worked to make sure the fingers were pointed in the wrong direction

Exactly. Dementia donnie didn’t build any of this. He just waltzed in and slapped his name on the place. The qons have been furiously working a certain kind of person into a froth over things like PBS and NPR for decades.

This is red meat for the low-brow morons that have been GRRR, MAD about Nice Polite Republicans and the Petroleum Broadcast System ever since I can remember.

They don’t actually watch or listen to either, but they sure are mad as hell about it because they have been told to be mad about it.

Listen, Trump’s finally going to be running the US like a business. So he’s going to deliver as little as possible while charging as much as possible.

And then… What is that money going to get used for, exactly?

That’s the fucked up part in all of this. A government is much closer to something like a non-profit than it is to a business. Because, like, when you’re a government and have a monetary surplus, what do you do with it? Of course you just wanna spend it!

I know the actual answer is “to give to the billionaires because apparently having enough money for 2000 uber-wealthy lifetimes is not enough” but you know

I don’t think even he quite knows what he wants to do with it. Just “make America great” which mostly seems to involve making him seem important.

          Profits, of course.

Oh, for you? No, silly, for the hard-working billionaires who created all those great jobs for you to do!

The warm feeling of helping billionaires in need of a new yacht?

Not enough? Fine, here is another great benefit: The money will also go to fund and expend the new US gestapo ICE. Soon, ICE won’t just go after ‘Mexican looking’ people, but also anyone critical of Trump, so they really need more people.

      They get concentration camps.

Maybe they should consider not paying taxes.

  • Makes sense considering both NPR and PBS are reputable news sources that report fairly and do good journalism. IE, they tell the truth and can’t be paid off. Exactly what Trump hates.

Wasn’t there some discussions earlier about the fact that government funding was less than 1% of what’s needed to run NPR ?

They’ve been so starved for funding for decades now, that most of NPR’s funding is from listener contributions. PBS as well, but I think to a slightly lesser degree.

Nah they get more than that, it’s like 40-70% but it filters through individual member stations. This cut will be felt. Even the shift in his first term towards more corporate donations to stay afloat hurt them, badly.

Some Trump crony sent them a letter saying they could no longer criticize trump in any way and must praise trump at the start of each show and they said, uh, no fuck off. So they are cutting all their funds. This is just a guess.
