right and these super-trained professionals couldnt just shoot her in the leg or attempt a non lethal method. couldnt just leave the apartment and back off… had to shoot to kill.
Astounding how people still say this shit every day. Cops are not action movie stars, most are barely competent. Just look at all the news reports when 5 cops mag dump someone and fire 100 shots and hit 3. No they can’t just shoot someone in the leg.
There’s also the fact that any shot can be lethal. People die from being shot in the leg. There is no body part that can be shot safely.
There are weapons that are less lethal than guns. There are techniques to deescalate without weapons. Those would be better options in nearly every case of police shootings.
Its not reasonable to say that cops should use their death gun, designed to cause death, in a way that doesn’t. When shooting someone with a gun the shooter has already decided to kill. The proper technique when shooting is to aim to the center of mass because that gives the highest chance of hitting the target, and not hitting things that are not the target.
ACAB. They should not be allowed to own or carry guns, but not because they don’t aim for legs.
As I understand it, the point where a cop reaches for a gun is only when they think lethal force is necessary - they aren’t trained to shoot the leg, if they are shooting it is to kill.
Sublethal methods are fine, but that is usually with a taser or pepper spray, shooting only happens when they feel they need to quickly kill a threat.
The problem is that a cop’s brain often incorrectly identifies what is a threat and jumps to killing too quickly, partially because that is what they are drilled and trained to do (and partially for other reasons - like too little mental health support, not enough rotation / off-time from danger which increases the chances of developing PTSD and increases the likelihood of overreaction, etc.).
The problems are more structural - the culture, training, and the mission of the police are more like an occupying military force, and that has predictable negative outcomes on the population controlled by that military force.

and this is why they should not be lethally armed. full stop.
