I just browsed all which I rarely do, but the whole scaled feed was filled with nsfw posts from lemmit.online. What’s up with this instance? It seems they repost everything from reddit to their own instance? It really feels like those instances should be defederated but I at least blocked it myself.
"I don’t like it…
- “…so it should be banned” (for everyone) is never the right approach.
- “…so I blocked it” (for me) is.
It’s a simple heuristic that works in almost every situation.
You don’t know what value something you don’t like provides to others.
Based
It’s a Reddit to Lemmy crossposting instance. It automatically posts stuff from Reddit to Lemmy. I’ve blocked it.
If you don’t like it. Block it and move on and let those who find usefulness with it continue to use it
You’re right, it mirrors stuff from Reddit. I use it to get news from niche communities. You can request communities to be mirrored. Blocking it is the correct move, when it has nothing for you.
I’m pretty sure they don’t take new requests. Saw that on sidebar some time ago.
I wonder if anyone actually uses lemmit.online. I’ve blocked it, and seems everyone else blocked it, too. It is good for one thing, in my opinion. Every few weeks, we get someone come up with the idea that Lemmy needs a bridge to pull in Reddit content, to make it easier for Reddit users to switch. And we can just say, it’s already there, point them at lemmit.online and be done with it. But I’ve never heard someone say it adds to this place. In my opinion it just dumps random noise here. And 95% of people don’t like to talk to bots, but want humans to talk to…
But yeah, someone put in some effort to program and maintain it. So I guess it scratches an itch for at least one person.
I need it to keep up with news from very niche groups. Lemmy just doesn’t have the numbers to achieve the same level of information exchange.
Thanks for the report. I figured someone must be using it, but seems you’re amongst a very select few people. Most other people I know who need/want to stay in touch, just go to Reddit instead. I mean the site is still there… And you’ll get the content over there including comments, votes and the ability to talk… But sure, I’m okay with either of that.
But why use many app when one app do trick?
I really only need the articles themselves. It’s more or less a glorified RSS feed. But on the off chance that I do want to read comments or interact the link to the original post is always right there.
Especially with a lot of the content being posted on there is not just nsfw but also super fringe. I feel there’s a lot of uncomfortable things being posted, but I might just be sensitive…
I think that’s just how Reddit is. Maybe a bit skewed by the selection of subs. And unlike other big US american platforms, Reddit has a history of being lenient on NSFW. They’ve always discussed intimacy there, including some niche stuff like posting pictures of their genetalia and letting other people rate it… I don’t know what to say, this is the internet… But yeah, use the features Lemmy offers. Subscribe to communities which appeal to you, and don’t just scroll through the random pile of weird stuff and then complain it’s weird and contains a lot of noise. Use the features to block and mute stuff.
I think all of this is a trade-off. We might want to embrace diversity and libertarianism. At least that’s my own personal take. And in my opinion that includes letting people use the place for mildly weird things which I don’t understand. Of course that doesn’t translate to outright bad stuff. But I don’t think we need to be a ‘smoothed out’ place. I believe it’s better to offer some technical tools to let people coexist. And we kind of have everything in place to do this. I just think Lemmy’s “All” feed is a bit detrimental to what we’re trying to achieve. I’ve subscribed to the things I like to see and I’d say it works relatively well. It’s rare that I see nsfw or cringe posts, other than the usual noise and memelords. The software takes care of suppressing that for me, and I’m libertarian enough to not mind if it exists, as long as I don’t have to watch it. YMMV. If it’s more than fringe, report it to the admins or the bot owner.
Yeah, don’t misunderstand me. I don’t mind them existing, but I don’t want to see it. My mistake maybe by browsing all using scaled sort tho, top is usually fine. But I usually just don’t browse all, I curate my subscribed comms instead.
I’d say this is likely a very specific problem with lemmit.online. I mean since everyone blocked it, there isn’t really anyone paying attention to what the bots do there, or what kind of content is stored on that instance… The active people here might not even notice if it goes rampant. If I were the admin of dbzer0 or another large instance, I’d just defederate and save the new users from making that experience.
repost everything from reddit to their own instance
And steal potential business away from amateur DIY workers trying to make a living. But the same people who tell you how pro working class they are and who complain about AI stealing fan art, won’t see any problem with it because there’s this weird entitlement thing going on as far as people’s attitudes towards porn goes.
OnlyFans provides them a platform to sell their wares but doesn’t pay them in advance. So it’s not stealing from OnlyFans, it’s literally stealing business straight from the worker’s hands. Part of me has been tempted to start contacting them so that they can maybe take some sort of action against it.
Is there an OnlyFans bridge, or what are we talking about?
An account literally called ‘Bot’ (so probably run by the admins of that instance) that seems to pretty much mirror entire NSFW subreddits, specifically subreddits that content creators make use of.
But it doesn’t matter, I’m probably gonna delete this comment and my first comment soon. Because I’m really not in the mood to hear all of the justifying of it and excuses for it from people who like to go around acting like paragons of virtue in all other areas.
Well, I can’t see anyone disagreeing for the last 7h… But sure, it’s likely going to happen. Have a nice day. Thanks for the info. I’m not that much into NSFW subreddits myself. I’ve seen several ones, but I wouldn’t say I’m very knowledgable with the inner workings of the culture there.
I’ve honestly been considering that line of work myself for the last couple of years because I’m reaching the point of last resorts. So I’ve spent the last couple of years lurking in the spaces where creators discuss the business so that I can learn from them. And also because I like to enlighten myself with what people from completely different walks of life are doing and saying.
And maybe that’s why I’m currently looking at them as human beings that are trying to make a living and not objects that everyone is entitled to for free.
I think a lot of people think that these creators are raking in thousands of dollars a day because of one or two success stories in the media years ago when OnlyFans was new. But these guys work fucking hard and often go through months where they’re battling to put food on the table. So personally, I think it’s pretty fucking shitty that a bot is taking all of their promo work and posting it here where people will never even look at their links.
And yeah, no one has disagreed here directly to me but I’ve seen what people are saying about it in other places here on Lemmy.
Agreed. I mean I don’t think the general public is even concerned with that. For 99% of people, NSFW is visiting a porn streaming site, and they get whatever they’re interested in. And for free. That’s the expectation.
I think the BBC did a good documentary on NSFW creators a few years back. I can’t remember the name. But what they depicted wasn’t success stories. It was one gay couple who were very successful, with a very nice fanbase… But all the other people they showed didn’t get rich or anything especially after the 20% cut and taxes. Plus there’s expectations from the audience and lots of competition. Seemed like really hard work, sometimes with severe downsides (sometimes not so much). And some of them struggled and the text card at the end said they quit after filming of the documentary. I might misremember the details. But at least that depiction of OnlyFans seemed more honest to me. And they were all putting in a good amount of time and it weighed down on their lifes, friendships and often relationships.
I’ve also seen a bit of what happens on Reddit. But all I’ve seen is using that platform to advertise for a paid account on a different platform. Seems to me it’s often one or two pictures and an onlyfans link somewhere. So I’d say it’s more advertising material than proper content on Reddit. At least if it’s the creators themselves. Other people just steal arbitrary content and repost that somewhere. The majority doesn’t seem to care for copyright too much. At least that’s what I’ve seen on the more popular subs. But as I said, I’ve just had a glimpse at it, I might be wrong. But if it’s true, it’s a systemic problem. And it starts on platforms like Reddit itself. (And another thing I learned is that Twitter got used for NSFW as well, like for videos, animations and by people who create adult games on Patreon.) But I bet you don’t need to worry about explaining whether it’s alright to steal advertising material, if the whole situation is like it is.
Yeah they’re basically on any platform that will accommodate them. When they’re not filming anything, the bulk of their work is marketing. Their advertising material on Reddit (and other places) is what leads to money in their bank accounts. Their advertising material on Reddit being taken and posted here leads to no money in their bank accounts.
I think that apart from people just generally not caring how they get the content they want, people also just have zero respect for these workers. They don’t see them as fellow human beings trying to live. Or as deserving of credit or respect as other types of content creators such as artists, musicians and talentless jackasses that complain about the woke agenda on YouTube. They’re just something to bust a nut to for these people but not real.
I’m not sure that I can really blame people’s attitudes towards it though. We’ve all been kinda trained by endless scrolling porn sites to expect it all to be easy and free. And I can’t say that I wouldn’t have also been dismissing this as not a big deal if I hadn’t taken the time to get to know what these people are all about on a different level. I probably would’ve still been under the assumption that they’re raking in endless cash and living easy.
So yeah. It’s probably futile trying to change people’s attitudes towards it. And it’s probably a problem that will never go away and is just part of the game.
I’m not sure whether it’s futile. I mean societal change happens. And it’s a big step forwards that we have these platforms where independant creators get 80% revenue of a monthly subscription. A few years ago, stuff was just pirated, even on the big regular sites. Plus there wasn’t a good way to do it directly. You had to get into the porn industry and get paid for some DVD production. And as far as I understand, the porn industry is super problematic. So I’d say we’re making progress. But educating people… Idk, it’s always hard. Maybe futile, yeah. This isn’t my fight. I’ve tried lecturing people on other topics and I found it’s almost impossible to change the world. At least on a bigger scale. And if you’re involved yourself, progress always feels painfully slow. I don’t know what to make of this. I still refuse to resign with some topics.
Idk
