I just read Tender is the Night, by Fitzgerald. I made myself finish it because it is a classic, a “masterpiece.” I hated it. It was boring and tedious and all the characters were boring and tedious. Can anyone tell me why books like this got such acclaim?

@Caiotekit @books I haven’t read that, but I totally take your word on it.
I remember at least a third of that book is drawn-out historical descriptions of pointless things. Incredibly boring book overall.
@dessalines @Caiotekit I agree. The only thing good about it is its title.
My guess is some of the “classics” are such because they were made around the boom of the printing press, so it was one of the first stories to be easily accessible. Combine that with more access to education through public schools in a relatively short period afterwards and you got yourself the makings for the same stories being passed through generations.
