    I question this assumption. It’s based on a crypto-conservative mental model of a federation, where purity is more important than connection. The mirror image is a server that refuses to federate with any server that doesn’t ban queers and delete their posts.

      I’m not saying there’s no value in that style of federation, or that it’s somehow “wrong”. Just that it’s not universal.

      There’s also value in a model of federation that allows marginalised groups to get their messages out as widely as possible. Because as campaigns for things like drug law reform and Palestinian human rights demonstrate, some causes attract solidarity from groups who aren’t natural allies.
