I was told this the day after my father died. I was walking to my college class just trying to act normal. Wish I would have responded appropriately but being shell shocked over bigger problems prevented me.

I have no problem mouthing off to assholes - as long as I’m prepared. When it comes out of nowhere, my brain stalls up.

The correct response, and ive actually done this becausebim a complete edgelord and its my default was "you’re right. Grandma was a racist bitch; I should be happy she’s dead. Thanks mister!’

This happened to me about 10 minutes after I found out my childhood best friend committed suicide.

“OH SMILE! IT CANT BE THAT BAD!”

I just let it slide and paid for my damn smokes, lady was just trying to be upbeat and friendly. Dumping that on her would have just made her feel bad and wouldnt have made me feel any better.

Honestly sometimes people should be made to feel bad, and making comments to strangers about how they aren’t performing pleasantness satisfactorily enough for the general public is one of those times. Not dumping it on them definitely makes you the bigger person, but if someone doesn’t want people dumping their problems on them then telling every upset looking stranger “it can’t be that bad!” is the absolute worst way to go about it, lol.

It also could’ve been a lesson for her in being overly flippant with people who do sometimes have genuine problems they are mired in.

If anyone is wondering, it’s Jael or Yael, and Sisera. He was a defeated Canaanite general who fled to what he thought was a friendly village, but Jael had Israelite sympathies so she hammered a tent spike through his head while he slept. The image is from an illuminated 14th century manuscript from Germany.

The outfits are a bit anachronistic given the events allegedly took place in 10th century BCE Judea.

That was not usually part of the medieval illuminator’s mindset, I’m afraid. Communicating the social status and role of the two Biblical characters in a familiar context for the reader would typically have been more important to them.

If you want someone to smile, you don’t tell them to smile, that will just piss them off. The real solution is to try to make them smile by cheering them up. Ideally with something funny or wholesome. Who knows? They might really appreciate it and be a bit more fond of you.

Don’t smile like an idiot in your work Teams profile picture. Somebody might have a really bad day and you’re in their way.

…especially if you’re a mortician or something similar.

Unsiutably happy mortician is my favorite category of human. But, like, in a kind way. Love it.

Maybe it’s the forgotten 17th Shard that is spread out all over the Cosmere?? That would explain why all humans tend to be mysogynistic.
