  • but the reality is that nothing is free and somebody has to pay somewhere.

Youtube gained its market share and stopped any competitors arising by offering a free video platform. Now that there isn’t much hope for competition they have enshitified, plastering ads and demanding money. They endured massive loses for years just to kill competition. So boo fucking hoo when I continue using a monopolists products on the terms they originally offered.

  • This seems to be the new New Zealand way - there’s a problem, but rather than analyse the causes and implement remedies based on that, go full dipshit and implement a solution that doesn’t address the actual problem and probably won’t fix it.

It’s like the “road to zero” that we’ve copied from other countries. Except in other countries they look at what makes a road dangerous, an apply fixes based on that - installing barriers, straightening corners etc. In NZ that’s too hard, so just blanket lower the speed limit as a catch all fix.

So there is a problem with Maori and Pacific not getting the same access as other groups. It’s obviously too hard for anyone to figure out why that is, so just apply a policy that doesn’t address the root cause and likely won’t fix the problem.

  • I joined Reddit in 2006, so I remember a time before subreddits. I remember when upvotes and downvotes actually meant “contributes to the discussion” or “does not contribute to the discussion”. Reddit has degenerated into hive-mind group think, which is often wrong, and is completely unaccepting of views counter to the group. I always thought Slashdot’s approach to voting to be superior - categories of votes rather than a single blunt instrument.

I actually hope Reddit fails now. It hasn’t been an enjoyable place for discussion in years.
