I have never bought any type of loot boxes, magic cards, even Pokémon cards, but saying that you can’t criticize a gambling company if you have partaken in gambling is absurd.

There are too many idiots online,. If you make that kind of joke you should at least use tone indicators.

It’s way too common for people to say something that was stupid like that while fully meaning it, then back up and say it was a joke when people give them flack for it. If it was bad enough that people give you flack for it because it’s that stupid, or even god forbid, misinformative. You deserve every bit of that backlash.

bit too extreme of an example. I think valve has done a LOAD more positive than negative when it comes to linux

Edit: I don’t understand why its controversial, valve has gotten a TON of attention to Linux in the past few years. Once (or if) they release the Linux desktop distro, Linux supported software is going to skyrocket.
This isn’t even mentioning Proton which has made a TON of games work compared to how few it was a few years ago. Modern AAA titles can run on Linux no issue! It’s amazing!
I understand valve doesn’t fully embrace the FOSS mentality, and for some people that’s a negative, but I think even getting people trying Linux is a positive or at the very least a step in the right direction.

Linux is gaining popularity in the average person and I really look forward to the future of Linux.

Proton improved Linux gaming compatibility by several orders of magnitude, on all distros and across nearly all desktop and laptop hardware, including for non-steam games and even non-gaming applications. Steam deck is a pretty small piece of that.

Wine was so complicated and hit or miss back in the day. So glad games can just work now, and for no extra cost.

Most games work out of the box on Linux thanks to steam, and in a lot of cases better than om Windows.

as a linux gamer, i cant deny the good valve has done for linux gaming. but to me that doesnt excuse steam as a monopoly, the gambling, valve’s uncaring responses to steam scams and such. minor issues also irritate me, like their removal of library sharing (screw the new family bs they added), bs drm locks that dont let me play games without launching the app. i intend to stop using steam soon, for many reasons it sucks and i feel horrible paying them anything. and thats just me im not here arguing others should do that, do what u think is best for u. i find wine good enough for my games and i dont do online gaming so im fit for quitting steam

I’m very much in agreement. Whatever good they have done for the linux community doesn’t make them good. Also crucially, many of the things they’ve done to make games run better, aren’t things they can take away or that they have exclusivity of. Like their contributions to Wine. It means if you use Wine to play games on Linux you get the benefit without needing to use Steam or support Valve. They’re giving it away, they can’t take it back or ban you from it it. It was a charity donation.

But just like donating to charity hasn’t made MrBeast not an evil, greedy, manipualtive person, Valve’s generosity doesn’t make the bad things they’ve done and continue to do okay or excusable.

bs drm locks that dont let me play games without launching the app.

Just want to make people aware, there are DLL patches and Steam Emulators that allow running games without Steam. I just want people to be aware of this because I hear people talking about Steamworks DRM like it’s some bane to preservation, when it’s not. Not even close.

You got some other good points, but the new family system works way better now. Previously only one person was allowed to use any one persons entire library at a time, now game sharing is locked on an individual basis

You have to join a Family to share games, and you have to wait 1 year before joining another one after you leave a current Family. Publisher sanctions on Family sharing don’t really make it better either, they make it worse. Really the idea of treating Family sharing like it’s something to be abused (which is why it’s so tightly locked down) ruins it as a feature.

That is a fair point. To me its horrible because I can no longer even share library with someone who is nearby but travels a lot. Not to mention, I dont accept that games I own cant be shared with people who arent nearby geographically. But its even more absurd that steam’s whatever system forbids even people who arent regularly nearby, its not just me, I’ve heard that from multiple people.

It may be better for certain cases as you said. But there is no doubt in my mind that the goal was, at least partially, to stop people from sharing games in general. And I dont support that. I should be able to send my game to someone if I purchased it, and steam locking you from playing that game should be more than enough restriction in sharing.

You are fair to disagree, there are multiple points you can say about my critiques here. Like steam doing this to subsidize the cost of hosting games and downloads. But for me, this family sharing change and me not being able to share with someone bc they travel was enough to push me over the fence of quitting steam. So to me, the family sharing change is a huge deal.

Yeah I’ve heard of issues people have with actually getting a family setup, I’m not sure what the rules are as I’m sharing with someone who lives in Europe (I’m in the us) and also someone who’s on the opposite side of the US as I am
