IGNORE: This is happening at lemmy.world, not here. See my screenshots showing the censorship which happens at lemmy.world end.

This is all very exciting to figure out.

Original post…

I’m going to post a bug report to Lemmy but it seems my comment body that contains about 6 instances of the f-word gets blocked from posting at all.

Post body I intended is below. Posts with the f-word in get blocked entirely.

Comments get the word censored. The filtering is fucking idiotic and over-zealous.

TLDR: WHY IS A UK SERVER BLOCKING MENTION OF A UK FOODSTUFF?

The slur filter is set at an instance level. I removed several more vanilla (fuck/shit/cunt etc.) words from the generic one I imported.

If you have a way we can filter people directing homophobic slurs at each each other, without affecting the once a year someone wants to talk about Mr. Brains Pork Balls, I will gladly listen.

Edit: (We also had issues with the filter not running previously, so it may go through a few rounds of tuning still).
Extra edit: (Yea, I think it’s still not actually doing anything at an instance level)

removed isn’t a homophobic slur and shouldn’t be filtered on a UK instance. It’d be like a Spanish instance filtering “negro” which is just Spanish for black.

Or a Mexican instance filtering Latino to LatinX.

Why should a UK instance be infected by American culture war bollocks?

I’m gay and to me “puff” would be the British equivalent but I’m not asking that the word be censored cos I think censoring words is pointless. It’s easy to get round filters.

This is how America gets a culture win on Civ games.

Can’t you remove the filter at the instance level since it is a UK instance?

Unless I’m misunderstanding, I think the point is that because the account you’re using to access this is a lemmy.world one, it is the lemmy.world filter list that is being applied to what you see, not the feddit.uk one.

If I type “Mr Brain’s Faggots” it will still be visible to me and to other feddit.uk users, but by the time that message ends up on your lemmy.world server it’ll have been filtered out.

      You’re absolutely right!!

      Down pitchforks!!!

It’s a Lemmy.world thing. I’ve posted a screenshot as another user and using Feddit directly it’s not censored. Here’s what it looks like at Lemmy.world…

I may have been wrong but this has bene useful in figuring stuff out. I probably should have checked the code though before ranting at Feddit admins for something they weren’t doing though. Thanks anyway! 🙂

In addition the filter outright BREAKS the instance when posting. Try making a text post with the word removed in the body (it fails to post). No error or message is displayed.

Like I say I’m going to submit a bug report on GitHub when I can get off the toilet for 5mins because at a fundamental filtering level - it’s a broken feature when it simply blocks the post outright with no explanation.
