IGNORE: This is happening at lemmy.world, not here. See my screenshots showing the censorship which happens at lemmy.world end.
This is all very exciting to figure out.
Original post…
I’m going to post a bug report to Lemmy but it seems my comment body that contains about 6 instances of the f-word gets blocked from posting at all.
Post body I intended is below. Posts with the f-word in get blocked entirely.
Comments get the word censored. The filtering is fucking idiotic and over-zealous.
TLDR: WHY IS A UK SERVER BLOCKING MENTION OF A UK FOODSTUFF?
Fag-g-ot gets censored by Lemmy by default. E.g. removed. It’s literally built into the fucking source code of Lemmy
Why are we allowing brain-dead AMERICAN culture-war bullshit to block us from discussing British suet pudding?
You know what’s offensive to me as a gay Brit? The over-sanitisation and kid-proofing the internet has gone through since the late 90s/early 00s. It’s pathetic.
Mr Brains Pork removeds are lovely though the name has always made me think of brains and as a kid I often assumed removeds were made of brains.
Is this a British server or is it a fucking American site?
Apparently large areas of the country don’t even eat removeds and that’s why many Brits don’t talk about them - but they’re fucking removed-less idiots. Cos many parts of the UK (esp. working class folk) do eat removeds.
So admins/mods/assorted dickheads: Remove that brain-rot word from the “slur filter” please? It’s not a slur! It’s a food! I’m sick to the back fucking teeth of the Americanisation of our online spaces.
Free the removed!
This is the post body - it wouldn’t post and I assume it’s cos of the fucking FILTER!
Note the “censored” shite?
admins/mods/assorted dickheads
🤣🤣🤣 That’ll get their attention.
I’m not insane. It’s Lemmy.World (I’m the OP poster btw with a new account and I see faggot now!!)
Here’s what it looks like on Lemmy.world. See the “E.g. censored” ?
Stop talking to yourself!
The slur filter is set at an instance level. I removed several more vanilla (fuck/shit/cunt etc.) words from the generic one I imported.
If you have a way we can filter people directing homophobic slurs at each each other, without affecting the once a year someone wants to talk about Mr. Brains Pork Balls, I will gladly listen.
Edit: (We also had issues with the filter not running previously, so it may go through a few rounds of tuning still).
Extra edit: (Yea, I think it’s still not actually doing anything at an instance level)removed isn’t a homophobic slur and shouldn’t be filtered on a UK instance. It’d be like a Spanish instance filtering “negro” which is just Spanish for black.
Or a Mexican instance filtering Latino to LatinX.
Why should a UK instance be infected by American culture war bollocks?
I’m gay and to me “puff” would be the British equivalent but I’m not asking that the word be censored cos I think censoring words is pointless. It’s easy to get round filters.
This is how America gets a culture win on Civ games.
Can’t you remove the filter at the instance level since it is a UK instance?
Unless I’m misunderstanding, I think the point is that because the account you’re using to access this is a lemmy.world one, it is the lemmy.world filter list that is being applied to what you see, not the feddit.uk one.
If I type “Mr Brain’s Faggots” it will still be visible to me and to other feddit.uk users, but by the time that message ends up on your lemmy.world server it’ll have been filtered out.
You’re absolutely right!!
Down pitchforks!!!
It’s a Lemmy.world thing. I’ve posted a screenshot as another user and using Feddit directly it’s not censored. Here’s what it looks like at Lemmy.world…
I may have been wrong but this has bene useful in figuring stuff out. I probably should have checked the code though before ranting at Feddit admins for something they weren’t doing though. Thanks anyway! 🙂
In addition the filter outright BREAKS the instance when posting. Try making a text post with the word removed in the body (it fails to post). No error or message is displayed.
Like I say I’m going to submit a bug report on GitHub when I can get off the toilet for 5mins because at a fundamental filtering level - it’s a broken feature when it simply blocks the post outright with no explanation.
Ignore this guy. Completely unhinged. What kind of roboplegic wrongcock calls themselves a cashew nut? Lunatic!
Fellow gay seal of approval
Y’all can’t say faggot over there? Maybe you should hop over to kBin.
I just checked on the original instance and the post is showing up on feddit.uk
Who exactly is keeping you from saying fag?
Ok, so it doesn’t show up on lemmy.world
Odd.
Very odd but your comments aren’t the only ones. There’s a 17 vs 29 (12 comment) difference between the 2 instances.
OK this is weird.
My comments as both users are showing immediately on both instances. YOU aren’t showing on Lemmy.world though. I was gonna see if your “fag” propogated but none of your comments have gone across.
Comment counts here are at 29 (as of commenting)
Comment counts on Lemmy.world are at 16 (as of commenting)
There’s a TON of missing comments over there.
See original from Lemmy.world here: https://lemmy.world/post/10877187
I see your example from my lemmy server (and client, eternity)
Do you see the posts which have fag, faggot in them and if yes are the words unaltered as they display?
Yep, everything appears unaltered - at least I assume so! Here’s a partial screenshot:
Is it a specifically lemmy.World thing do ya think?
On further checking kbin posts don’t even seem to federate there so I can’t check.
That seems like a reasonable assumption, at least if I’m understanding everything correctly.
It is yeah. I’m the OG poster with a new account on Feddit.UK. Look at my original post and the censored words:
I wonde rif people are downvoting me cos I just look like I’m ranting about nothing. 🤣
I wonde rif people are downvoting me cos I just look like I’m ranting about nothing. 🤣
I don’t know if perhaps there are downvotes that don’t federate to us, but on kbin votes are public and no one seems to have downvoted you.
This is a post without that word as a test.
Either it hasn’t federated to .world yet or the word being in my profile is keeping it from showing up.
