Welcome to the Pathfinder and Starfinder Lemmy Community.
As a response to Reddit’s recent changes to it’s API costs, I’ve decided to move towards using Lemmy as a link aggregation website. In doing so, I found that there was a lack of Pathfinder and Starfinder communities, so I decided to start one.
Right now this community runs on a t3.small instance on AWS because I had the terraform to spin that up ready to go. In the future I’ll be looking to move it to my homelab and hosting it from there.
I have a lot of respect for Paizo as a company, so I strive to stay within their community site guidelines. Please let me know if you notice anything that would violate their terms so I can resolve it immediately.
I’m also not very accustomed to running online communities. If anyone has suggestions or wants to help out, please let me know.
Hey, really glad to have found this community. I hope it can grow successfully.
Out of interest, have you tried contacting the Reddit /r/Pathfinder_RPG and /r/Pathfinder2e moderators? They might be willing to work with you to help grow this community by providing moderation guidance and via an official partnership.
That’s a great idea. I had thought about posting in one of their announcement posts, but messaging them directly might be a better route.
I’ve never been a Reddit user, but I’m interested in giving Lemmy a shot and I was excited to see a dedicated Pathfinder instance, so thanks for that! I’m active on Mastodon (dice.camp) so I love that I can follow “communities” and users of Lemmy and have them show in my Mastodon feed. Then I don’t have to check as many sites directly.
I look forward to the success of pathfinder.social.
Hi! Dunno if you recognize me from our small chats the other day, SenseiRat. I’ve decided to migrate here, both to have a curated local feed of stuff I care about but also because .world was becoming a little too big (and decentralization is the point, after all!) and unmoderated for my liking (started being defederated by other instances and everything…), hopefully that’s ok!
Are there any plans on hosting a Matrix server or Mastodon/Clackey instance to go along with the Lemmy? Mastodon has dice.camp (which I wish was Clackey, the interface for it is a bit better), I suppose, but we’re sorely missing a Matrix for TTRPGs/Pathfinder - the public ones I could find, at least, were months-long dead with no members in it unfortunately.
I know there’s the PF2e Discord, but with Discord’s recent changes and all of the stuff with Reddit I’ve started to really favor federated alternatives.
I could put up a Matrix, I’m not sure when I’ll get to work on it, and I have some cleanup work I need to do on this instance, but I might be able to look at it on Monday.
For Mastodon/Clackey, I use Mastodon for my other fediverse account, which is more public facing and doesn’t have anything TTRPG related (all connected to this account), so I wasn’t thinking about setting it up, but I might consider putting one up, sometime after the Matrix instance goes up.
There’s no rush! I was just curious if you had any plans on placing down other formats in case other platforms struggle or people have preferences for other formats of discussion, mostly trying to get a feeler. Only do it if you want to ^^
So I checked out Calckey this morning and it looks really nice. I’ll add both to my list of projects.
Can I humbly request that this instance blocks Lemmygrad?
Normally I would say that it would be up to the community and make a post about it (I’m not trying to be a dictator) to let the people who use this community decide.
However, in reviewing the modlogs and talking to a couple of other admins/mods that I know, the behavior of at least a portion of their members does not fit the rules of this community, nor does it align with the views of Paizo, so it is blocked moving forward.
I am happy and available to discuss this decision if anyone has comments, questions, concerns, or complaints.
ETA: I did review the reports and another mod had resolved them before I saw them; just wanted to make it known that I am watching those, even if I can’t be around to handle them all the time (shameless plug for looking for mods advertisement).
Hey there @SenseiRat@pathfinder.social , just posting to say hi and thanks for hosting. I was browsing the list of instances and was so happy to see a Pathfinder-aligned option.
Thank you for joining; happy to have you here and happy to be able to provide something back to an awesome community.
Looking forward to checking this spot out, I got sold on Mastodon when the bird site went cuckoo, and TTRPGs are one of my main draws to Reddit, so maybe this is perfect timing?
Glad to have you as part of the community!
FYI, I made a post to
Pathfinder2e@lemmy.ml
about this new instance: https://lemmy.world/post/10995. The previous community was never real active, but there’s a few subscribers there who may be interested in what you’re doing here. Looking forward to chatting about pathfinder together.Awesome, I appreciate it. I don’t think running a community is my forte, so I’m hoping I can get some people in that are better at the social part than I am. I considered just finding or starting a community on one of the established boards, but I was afraid it might get lost in the rest and that a dedicated space was the right fit for it. Hopefully that pans out for the community.
@SenseiRat @PriorProject Hi! I’m just trying out posting/commenting from Mastodon. I tried signing up directly but could not get a confirmation email. Happy to help anyway I can.
Hi and welcome! I’m looking into some issues with signups and logins, I’m not sure if they’re a backend issue (based on a couple of issues reported on Github), or something with the server. I’m hoping to get a chance to play around with it and do some troubleshooting after work today.
I’d definitely be interested in working with anyone who wanted to help out with moderating, advertising, or just posting more content.
@SenseiRat Thanks so much! I have seen a few other mentions of those issues elsewhere. I did try logging in to no avail. Once I get an account on your instance I’m happy to help with all of the above! Maybe In make a new one without an email? I can also help debug on my end if there’s something that would be useful to try.
Hey @doggoblingames@dice.camp, I think I may have figured out the issue. Can you try logging in again? I know if you try to create a duplicate account, it will have the same issue, but if you need to recreate, I can probably get into the database and kill the user account because I still haven’t figured out how to do user management in Lemmy yet.
