The Conservative MP Miriam Cates, a high-profile figure on the party’s right wing, is being investigated by the parliamentary standards watchdog.
Cates, the MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge in South Yorkshire since 2019, is being investigated for “actions causing significant damage to the reputation of the house as a whole, or of its members generally”, a brief notice on the website of the commissioner for standards said.
The inquiry falls under paragraph 17 of the updated 2019 code of conduct for MPs, which says: “Members shall never undertake any action which would cause significant damage to the reputation and integrity of the House of Commons as a whole, or of its members generally.”
She sounds like a really nice person to know.
But she has often captured the media’s attention with her controversial views around family, claiming the declining birth rate in the UK was partly down to “cultural Marxism” and increased numbers of people going to university.
Just be good little thickos and breed for the we, who deserve to have you serve us.
According to ITV there are 8 under investigation.
A total of eight MPs including Miriam Cates are currently under investigation by the Standards Commissioner, including Deputy Speaker Dame Eleanor Laing, veteran conservative Sir Bernard Jenkin and Reclaim MP Andrew Bridgen.
Deleted part. bad link.
She’s also an evangelist, pro-conversion therapy, a TERF, and a staunch defender of Suella Braverman. She thinks LGBTQ rights charities teach “extreme ideologies that don’t have a basis in science” and she felt that, when COVID was in full swing, focusing on protecting the elderly only had a short-term effect on the “longevity of older people” and that the government should have instead focused on the “long term impact of lockdowns on young peoples’ lives”.
She’s a piece of work.
She’s also introduced a Bill to parliament saying sex education is inappropriate. The org I’m a part of wrote a piece on it a few weeks ago. She had some interesting advisors listed on the Bill.
Sorry, I don’t think that this list is right for the current investigation, this list is from an article dated November 2021 and there are nine people on the list - which doesn’t include Cates, Laing or Jenkin.
Liddel-Grainger got a ‘slap on the wrist’ admitted fault and promised not to do it again in Jan 2022: https://www.parliament.uk/globalassets/documents/pcfs/rectifications/mr-ian-liddell-grainger-mp-rectification.pdf, and ditto Kawczynski: https://committees.parliament.uk/committee/290/committee-on-standards/news/160250/committee-on-standards-releases-a-report-on-the-conduct-of-daniel-kawczynski-mp/
It is interesting to note that Bridgen was under investigation in 2021 and is apparently under investigation again though!

Cheers I don’t know how I missed the date.
Somewhat possible by-election klaxon!
Miriam Cates represents the brilliantly named constituency of Penistone and Stocksbridge* where she had a majority of 7,210 at the 2019 GE. The seat was previously held by Labour.
*Why brilliantly named? Because Stocksbridge sounds so much ike Cocks-bridge, of course.
EDIT: Fixed the name of the constituency, with assistance from @snaprails@feddit.uk !
Or would be if it was called that and not Penistone & Stocksbridge ☺️
A perfectly good joke, ruined by my neglecting to read to the end of a word (fixed now, thanks!).
😀
Oooh wonder what it could be
Odds are it’s some mundane corruption like peddling influence.
This is the best summary I could come up with:
The Conservative MP Miriam Cates, a high-profile figure on the party’s right wing, is being investigated by the parliamentary standards watchdog.
Cates, the MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge in South Yorkshire since 2019, is being investigated for “actions causing significant damage to the reputation of the house as a whole, or of its members generally”, a brief notice on the website of the commissioner for standards said.
We don’t believe it will stop the boats,” Cates told an impromptu joint press conference involving the five groups last week.
Cates is seen as being very much on the culture war-favouring side of the Tory right, also working with another of the five lobbies, the Common Sense Group.
The former biology teacher is a strong advocate of policies to encourage women in the UK to have more children, echoing the ideas of European populists such as Hungary’s Viktor Orbán and Italy’s Giorgia Meloni, and opposes allowing transgender people to self-identify.
At a conference in May run by the US-based National Conservatism group, Cates said the UK’s low birthrate was the most pressing policy issue of the generation, blaming it in part on “a cultural Marxism that is systematically destroying our children’s souls”.
