• Nothing Chats, a rival to apps like Beeper and AirMessage, advertised itself as a secure platform for sending messages to iMessage users.
  • However, less than 24 hours after its launch, investigations into the app revealed that Nothing Chats logged every message in plain text and stored unencrypted data, including text messages, images, videos, and more, making it a significant privacy and security risk.
  • The company removed the app from the Play Store following these complaints, citing “several bugs” that need fixing.

It’s started by the same chinese-born person that started OnePlus, which is fully taken over by Oppo now.

Oh ok, so you’re skeptical of anything coming from people born in China. There’s a name for that, if only I could remember…

All chinese companies are legally obliged to work with the chinese government, an authoritatian state which is acting hostile towards the west. Certain chinese phones have been found to have backdoors built in. Is it racist not to trust North Korea as well?

It’s not a Chinese company if I’m understanding correctly. It’s a British company run by a Chinese guy. Being from China is not a reason to distrust the product.

Well, this guy in particular did start OnePlus, which is a fully chinese company, cooperating with the chinese government.

Something always felt off about Nothing Phone, and in this case, I wasn’t wrong about distrusting him.

Btw, I use this app https://github.com/zhanghai/MaterialFiles made by a chinese-born citizen, so a person being chinese-born isn’t the problem.
