Bought lifetime, no updates since then. Last activity from Steve’s account (the developer) on Lemmy was over 3 months ago.

A month ago his colleague had an update. Nothing since then.

Did I just throw away my money on this app? Or do you guys think development will start up again?

Also, what do you guys think is the best alternative to Bean with a similar UI?

Hey CrispyWeinis, I want to express my apologies that I’ve made you feel as if you’ve wasted your money. That was of course never my intention but it’s clearly the situation that a lot of people are feeling.

Thank you for raising the question and I hope to turn things around in the coming weeks. I’ve posted a dev update to the Bean community.

Hopefully you can bear with me a little longer to fix things.

I’d suggest switching to Avelon. Mlem/Memmy/Voyager/Thunder honorable mentions.

I’m also feeling scammed, and I used to mod this channel.

Things started seeming fishy to me when Steve never responded to any of my messages or used any of the support tools I put together for him.

I ended up resigning my mod position a week or so after release. I wasn’t too shocked when the development ceased.

I still have Bean installed but mostly use Voyager now.

      Hey infinite_zero,

I’m extremely sorry you were put in that tricky position of moderating a channel that the dev was inactive in as well as dealing with the feeling of being scammed — I messed up, clearly!

As for the messages, I have not logged onto the web UI for Lemmy in quite some time and obviously have not been as active as I should have been here so didn’t catch them so I’m sorry if you felt like you were being ignored by me.

I’m hoping I can turn things around and correct the lack of updates both in development and communication in the coming weeks. I’m not going to make any excuses, I should have done a better job and I’m sorry about that.

Yeah, I’m probably not purchasing any lemmy apps because any update or lack of updates could break it or make it obsolete.

Avelon free is good if you can handle no multi-account support, limited filter options, and needing to manually insert images into replies. Maybe the 1.99 monthly for more accounts and filters is worth it while it works, but idk about that $30 lifetime for the same potential problem with Bean.

Voyager seems good all around. (edit: it’s missing instance blocking, but that won’t be an issue whenever the new Lemmy version that includes it gets deployed.)

Memmy is ok if you don’t want to hide posts, because it does it at the instance level where Lemmy inexplicably hides your own posts from your own profile page.

Voyager is pretty good, the UI is basically straight from Apollo. It also has frequent updates.

I wouldn’t recommend bean anymore, half the things never load, and it’s not as fast as other apps have become. I’m gonna check if Apple can refund my lifetime sub lmao.

    EDIT:

    Can’t refund, RIP.

I’ve tried other apps and keep going back to Voyager. Updates are pretty consistent, and bugs are def being squashed.

I’m still hopeful that Bean’s development will continue. It’s my favorite by far.

But my backup app is Thunder. It’s missing things like the ability to edit posts or make “pinned” subscriptions, though, which I’m hoping get added soon.
