DAPS have better internal hardware for audio, and it provides a distraction free listening experience, but is it worth paying a premium for one? Especially when there are more modern solutions out there such as portable Bluetooth DAC/Amps such as the Fiio BTR7 or Qudelix-5k paired with your smartphone. I’d love to hear your thoughts!
If you want a decent DAP for cheaper than a DAC/Amp, you can always get a used LG V50 ThinQ on Ebay for $50. You can use it as a 5G phone too if you want. Quad DAC, 3.5mm out, and it will drive 300ohm headphones well too. Solid display, stream from everywhere, play movies…just a thought.
I loved my v20 and if the v50 is also a metal case I’d +1 this opinion
Also, most phones DAC chip is intentionally limited to preserve power consumption and can be unlocked. My Zenfone 8 Qualcomm is limited to 6mW but can do 30mW.
That’s really up to you. Some people like having to not use their phone, so there’s nothing disturbing their listening experience. Or having to worry about battery life.
I admit, for me, I really like the idea of having dedicated controls, and a volume wheel. It’s a small thing, but I realise I prefer controlling volume via a wheel.
I have a btr3k for out and about, and a shanling m3x that I use at bedtime.
What I like about a dap for bedtime is that it is distraction free, so you can’t get sucked into doom scrolling before bed.
Personally, no. I use a good BT/wired portable amp and a good source app on my phone. Far cheaper and just as good. No second “phone” to cart around just for playing music.
My last DAP is a Sony A35 with a firmware mod and with the unlocked amplifier flag but I rarely use it these days. Make no mistake that thing sounds wonderful and I actually use it on my desktop rig everytime I want to play meme high resolution songs. The modded firmware also lets me use it as a Bluetooth receiver/DAC, but I rarely do it. With that out of the way, I think a DAP is only worth it if you have IEMs or headphones that can take the full potential from it. Imo usually stuff way above 300USD. If you listen to music from streaming services (lossless or not) just take the money you would spend on the DAP and buy a better smartphone that can be used with a simple passive USB C to 3.5mm adaptor, or if you enjoy dongles get a simple DAC. So my answer is not worth it unless you have really great IEMs. (Edit for grammar)
I’ve got the Sony NW-A105. Not too expensive. The main thing I like about it, is having it separate from my phone. For distraction reasons, but also because my phone doesn’t have expandable storage and the Walkman does.
