Doesn’t have to be law to be hypocritical. The point is this country is and always has been morally bankrupt. Our espoused values of freedom, democracy, and justice are in contradiction with our history.

No it was true … what they never mention is that “All men” meant “all white European Christian men”

The wording of all these documents was always meant for a very particular group of people. It just wasn’t explicit because if it had been, the entire country would have never gone along with it.

They were aware of the hypochrisy of slavery. You can see it in a lot of their correspondance. Lafayette was starting the experiment of buying a plantation, freeing and educating the slaves and pay wages. He wanted to prove to Washington among others the economic viability of such an endeavour. Unfortunately, the French Revolution started before he could move forward.

      Also rich*
Then again they probably left that part out since they were gathering an army for a revolution and all.

I think at the founding of the republic for many of the framers it was less about strict wealth than landownership. The whole ideal of Jeffersonian yeoman democracy: farmers were the only people who should matter and fuck the cities. Turns out the reactionaries haven’t really changed that much.

It was a fucking lie when it was written, having not included slaves or women.

Jefferson was an abolitionist when speaking hypothetically and invented the dumb-waiter so that his abolitionist friends didn’t have to observe the slaves that made their food when Jefferson had them over for dinner.

So when we create the new society, we need to assure – with ironclad language – that everyone has rights and is equal under law, down to the most heinous wrongdoer, the most crippled disabled person and the most squallid transient.

Let’s build a society where the poorest person lives pretty well, and has full access to their rights.

(It might also help if the richest person is limited in their wealth, say only a thousand times the worth of the poorest.)

It’ll take some work and deliberation.

The amount of physical and linguistic inventions that go back to slavery is astounding. The other day I learned that the ice cream truck jingle comes from the song “N**** Love A Watermelon Ha! Ha! Ha!”. When you start looking our racist history is everywhere.
