They used to be very cute and were functional dogs. Altdeutscher mops and retro pugs are good examples. Here’s an 1800s painting of one.
They are fine in “original” fkrm, but current degenerated pugs are not cute or healthy.

No, i meant, the whole head is disproportionally small in the picture.
Oooh, I get it. Painting issue? Maybe this one had a disproportionately small skull? My mystery mutt certainly does and he’s not a little dog.
