    Niche subs.

We just don’t have the users here for it yet. Some of the niche subs exist on Lemmy, there’s just no activity.

That’s about it though. I don’t miss Reddit discourse. Don’t miss 99% of my comments never being seen or responded to. I don’t miss Reddit censorship. There is some censorship here, but it’s entirely dependent on the sub and it’s pretty minimal. Crybaby mods are much less of an issue here.

Do you think it’s strictly a lack of users, or that the current userbase may have a rather narrow set of interests?

Mostly the slightly more niche entertainment based communities I think. Like how I was doing it on Reddit towards the end there was if I watched a movie that I loved or was particularly enjoying a series, I would search it up on Reddit and join. And a lot of them were really cool or fun spaces to hang around in. So like for example, I never really spent too much time in generic TV subs but my hangout spots were the specific subs for iZombie, Doom Patrol, Harley Quinn, Xena (I honestly especially miss the Xena subreddit). And that probably would’ve changed and evolved over the years.

Also loved doing stuff like having a marathon watch of all the Hellraiser movies, then making a review post in the subreddit. I did that for a couple of movie series: Hellraiser, the Crow, Starship Troopers. And a lot of those communities were pretty fun to keep around and lurk in as well.

Then also games. Like I’m playing Terraria, so I’d also look for the Terraria subreddit and subscribe.

And apart from that. Skincare and hair care style communities. ‘Fashion’ communities for alt / goth styles or even just for people to show off the cool shit they thrifted.

Honestly I think my real answer is that it just needs more niche stuff in general. Like, even as far as self care style subs go, I wasn’t limited to two big ones, there was even a subreddit for people with my specific eye shape (and tips pertaining to that) lol.

I realise that will all only come with time and a few more users though. And I’ve realised that we don’t even need that many more users. Already here on Lemmy, there’s a handful of users that partly carry this place on their backs by regularly providing content for us riff raff to interact with. We just need a few more of those users to provide all the lurkers and doom scrollers things to interact with.

Minorities. I feel like most people here are americans/europeans, which kind of makes a bubble.

Heh, there’s already tons of US defaultism here anyway ;) Anyways, i don’t really think EU-defaultism is too much better.

It also makes me very uncomfortable seeing people on lemmy support countries and politicians that are literally funding multiple genocides of arabs, and exploiting the third world for profit. I always loved r/arabs and other minority communities as a balance of sanity for that.

Lemmy’s supposed to be an international community, but i feel very second-class here :p

Me too. The depth of niches will grow proportionally with the size of the userbase, and as Reddit continues to ensh*ttify, the Lemmy/Mbin/Piefed userbase will increase.

I miss all the silly subs. I had a lot of subs that just had content that made me laugh or feel good. Lemmy has a lot more actual news which is always bad and depressing :/

Edit: Thanks for the recommendations guys!
