@essell
Some shoes have leather in them, in the past it was almost universal that shoes would be made of leather, but with the advent of modern plastics and rubbers most shoes these days aren’t made of leather anymore, since leather is more expensive.Side note, in the past shoes were much more repairable and there were actually people known as cobblers who would make and, get this, repair shoes. Nowadays many modern shoes, especially sneakers, are built in a way that makes them significantly less if not completely unrepairable, which really sucks. We should be able to repair shoes just like in the old days #righttorepair
Aren’t most cheap shoes vegan? It didn’t occur to me this is something I have to watch out for
There are a lot of leather shoes. :)
How mqny cheap shoes are made of real leather?

It’s possible, and if finances are a struggle you just kind of have to make your best guess in some cases, or buy used. Most of the time when shoes have leather, they advertise it pretty boldly, so that helps. Still, you never know - for example, what are the adhesives made out of? That’s why vegan certifications are important, a lot of things can be easily hidden, and a lot of companies aren’t particularly clear on their use of animal products even when reached out to directly.
Going vegan means learning to have to put everything under a microscope. The word ‘vystopia’ exists for good reason.
Vegan “leather” is made of plastic. Plastic is a by product of the oil industry. Oil is made out of dinosaurs. Plastic is not vegan.
Take THAT PeTA!
Also huge eye rolling and /s
Ackschully oil is made from plant matter, not dinosorus 🤓
Algae and Plankton technically, though some of those plankton (Zooplankton) are animals, not plants, they’re all mixed together and baked under high pressure, no way to separate the zooplankton from the phytoplankton.
Alt: wool lined moccasin
Also looks to be made of leather too, which is kind of a bigger problem.
No. Instead, it implies that eating this shoe is better for your health than eating a non-vegan one.
Do we have a term for individuals that refrain from eating shoes? Because vegan shoe or not, I identify as a person who doesn’t eat shoes.

Many shoes contain leather or wool or something. Vegan isn’t just about food
I know right, I’m surprised there are so many people here who don’t appear to get that. If I look at the image I assume the seller of this pair of shoes just slapped a buzzword on but vegan shoes and clothing are a thing and since when is everything that is not vegan carnivorous? Cheese and honey are also neither, right.
Jokes like this aren’t to imply that there are only two options. It also implies the existence of pescatarian shoes for example. The joke is that you apply other related terms to the situation, usually the most absurd of them. In this case carnivorous was probably chosen for the implication that the shoes themselves are carnivorous and would eat you if you wore them.
In that case I just didn’t get the joke because a meat-eating shoe would make a good joke
In this case, wouldn’t vegan be the opposite of organic?
No. Plants are vegan and can be used as material for shoes
But they aren’t, vegan shoes would be made of polyester/nylon/other plastics.
I have vegan shoes made of pineapple leaves. Checkmate atheist
They’re usually not, at least at this time. More R&D needs to go into plant-based materials for more options. Even so, leather itself is also anything but “organic.”
The one in the post looks like it’s polyester and foam. Why would plant based materials be better? I would think ideally you’d make the plastics out of ethanal and algie, but with how much processing goes into it, I’d hardly call that organic.
Did you watch the video?
I didn’t see how it was relevant.
So, mostly plastic with some plant materials?
It depends. For example I just made one quick search, “biodegradable vegan shoes”, and this was one of the first results:
Also see here, leather at least as bad environmentally, in addition to being ethically awful.

Seriously fuck you
I’m seeing 5 root comments, and a follow up, from the same account, all removed by mods. Was it just a troll or did I miss something exciting?
If you really really really want to know you can go look at blahaj’s mod log - but I warn you that some of the stuff removed can be particularly mean, obscene, illegal etc…
It doesn’t show in the modlog but in case anyone is wondering, it was gore/animal violence spam. If you didn’t see it consider yourselves lucky.

You are an evil piece of shit, seriously go fuck yourself, spammer.

Vegans avoid animal products outside food too?
“Vegan” originally meant “vegetarian + no non-food animal products”, which later got distorted into “vegetarian”, then thanks to crooks promoting the “carnivore” diet, “person that actually eats their veggies”. No really, the last one started to spread from gymbro forums after one of them said “um, ackchually, fiber is carbs too”.
Yes.
Sorry didn’t mean it as an actual question. More an incredulous tone
Depending on the reason for being vegan.
For animal rights/ethics, yes.
For health/climate, potentially less so.
Genuine question: Is avoiding leather really that great? Leather seems much more durable than plastic, and its from a part of the animal thats really just thrown away anyway.
-
making the leather is a horrible process, making skin into the product you know requires a lot of chemicals that aren’t great for the environment
-
Leather is not necessarily a byproduct but a coproduct.
Thanks for answering!
For the environment thing, would making leather clothes be worse than making plastic clothes?
-
Vegans love microplastics.
edit: lol, love you cud chewers
Vegan aka Synthetics. It’s just a fuckin buzzword.
Now if it was Oil and Animal free It would kinda cool.
No, vegan aka not made with shitty glue made of animal bones. It is not just a buzzword.
Hey horse Jesus died for our glue …
I have shoes that is printed from algae, they are vegan and synthetic free
Which company? I’m interested in seeing what they got because that’s pretty sick, i doubt they are sketchers though 😂
They are called vivo barefoot
That is actually really cool.
Something tells me the label “Plastic” wouldn’t sell as well.
Yeah this is just plastic washing.
Shit it even says it right there “machine washable”
That would be kind of wild! I wonder if it’s possible with that mango leather I’ve heard about.
My wife said the same but we never looked into it.
Now I can eat shoes without feeling guilty.
I am pretty sure that called leather
