The scene has him fly westward until the Earth appears to change direction, and then time reverses, but then it has him fly eastward a bunch before it starts turning the right way again. If it was just him moving really fast, that second part wouldn’t have been there

Might just be him losing speed by accelerating the other way? But yeah sounds like it might not make that much sense then
