The US is a walking cautionary tale. I really hope the rest of us learn from it in time to forcefully reject this shit before it hits the fan here as well.

History is littered with cautionary tales. We never learn.

In the last 2 decades, the major English bloc of US, Canada, UK and Australia has been in lock step toward the shift to the right. I think it is no coincidence that it aligns with the meteoric rise of Rupert Murdoch’s media empire. To satiate his incredible greed, his media organizations have fed into people’s fears and laid down the groundwork for today’s social media companies promoting inflammatory content to maximize engagement. I don’t know if democracy can survive without reining in popular media and significantly reducing biased and false reporting.

Canada and the US have rising tensions due to Donald Trump’s threats of tariffs and anexation, leading to the unusual booing of the US anthem at a recent NBA game in Toronto. Trump’s provocative remarks about Canada potentially becoming the 51st state, although unrealistic, have angered Canadians and created political complications.

Canada has significant global trade and political views, they’re proud of their identity, strong social democratic values and a distinct cultural and political separation from the US. The idea of Canada becoming part of the US is just not feasible legally, politically, or practically, and there is no genuine support for such a notion within Canada.

Canadian elections are coming and they’re crapping themseves. Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, previously leading in the polls, now faces challenges due to the shift in focus towards how Canada will handle the US threats. Because this is all crazy AF, the Liberal Party now has an advantage, led by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and his likely successor, Mark Carney.

The Conservative Party has to condemning the US Right while defending Canada’s autonomy, complicating their political strategy. They had recent strong polling, the election is no longer a straightforward win for the Conservatives, and Trump’s actions may ironically benefit the Liberals, potentially granting them another term in office.

I think it’s also going to depend on who the Liberals pick. I think Carney will have a better chance of winning than Freeland.

Good point, I had forgotten that the Liberal leadership race is underway. I’d personally be fine with either of them as the liberal party leader. But in the end, I’d rather the NDP be given a chance at governing.

I made the mistake of reading the comments.

So many right-wing Americans talking down on Canada’s public healthcare and left-leaning politics, praising Trump’s “fixes,” and acting like an authority on everything Canada. God, can we please fix our own problems before trying to ruin everything else with regressive changes?

Americans Have been fed propaganda for years through Fox News and the buying up of News media outlets, including social media, and not to mention Rupert Murdoch Empire. Education and intellectualism Have been demonize by the right and so now what we have is an uneducated populous that lacks critical thinking and just regurgitates what they “Political team” says. I say this is an American We are fighting the best we can but regulatory capture has taken over most if not all of governmental services and judicial processes. I’m sorry, and those words don’t seem enough to carry the magnitude of what your country is facing because of my countrys dismantling of our democracy.

Well said, and I wish our northern neighbors well. It can’t be easy sharing a border with a government actively ignoring and dismantling its systems of checks and balances, while its new leader is simultaneously make “jokes” about taking over neutral or allied countries.

What really annoys me is the self-righteousness, self-importance, and proselytizing of our low-information conservative members. Most of the world has either thrived or at least existed fine enough with socialism or politics designed to benefit its average citizen, and ever step of the way these chucklefucks are screaming “communism” and denigrating the very things that would have helped them live better lives. And then they try and force those views on other countries which have better standards of living than we do! It’s infuriating.

I hate PP as much as the next Leftist and will vote against and advocate, but I don’t feel existential dread over the idea of him being elected. So we got that going for us
