Hello all! I just created an Etymology community since I noticed there wasn’t a local one for those of us on LemmyWorld. Hope to see it grow. :)
Subscribed
Origin: late Middle English (in the sense ‘sign at the bottom of a document’): from Latin subscribere, from sub- ‘under’ + scribere ‘write’.
Awesome!😁
Love it. I’d never have thought to look for it, but I’m glad I stumbled across this post!
Yay! I started a community over on Squabbles for a bit, and it was primarily another mod and I posting content. Unfortunately they went MIA, so I’ve been bummed out about that because they were pretty active lol. Tried to find an etymology community on Lemmy, so I joined the Kbin one, after which I realized it was a bit dead and there was no one running it. So here we are. :)
I look forward to talking about insects!
Etymology is for word origins😊 But if you like bugs, you’re looking for entomology! There seems to be a cool community over here: !entomology@mander.xyz
(It was a joke. The mandatory one whenever an etymology group is set up.)
Can you do the eff word, first? Just demystify that bad boy real quick.
This video, History of the F word might come close https://piped.kavin.rocks/watch?v=FvPbxZmZxZ8

Is the new community for sharing knowledge only, or is it also a place to ask questions (ie: “What is the etymology of [xyz]?”)?
I’d say focus on sharing etymology findings for now. I’m not some linguistics professor or anything – just an amateur who created this community for fun. Maybe we could sustain more question posts once there are enough knowledgable subscribers to answer them. (I’m hoping some experts would discover the community actually, and maybe hop on as mods). :)
Edit: I just updated the community rules so clarify that question posts are allowed, as long as you please attempt to at least Google it yourself first. 😆
What is the etymology of etymology?
From Greek etumos “true, real” + -logia “study of” 🤗
Been waiting for this one!
