    Subscribed

Origin: late Middle English (in the sense ‘sign at the bottom of a document’): from Latin subscribere, from sub- ‘under’ + scribere ‘write’.

Yay! I started a community over on Squabbles for a bit, and it was primarily another mod and I posting content. Unfortunately they went MIA, so I’ve been bummed out about that because they were pretty active lol. Tried to find an etymology community on Lemmy, so I joined the Kbin one, after which I realized it was a bit dead and there was no one running it. So here we are. :)

Is the new community for sharing knowledge only, or is it also a place to ask questions (ie: “What is the etymology of [xyz]?”)?

I’d say focus on sharing etymology findings for now. I’m not some linguistics professor or anything – just an amateur who created this community for fun. Maybe we could sustain more question posts once there are enough knowledgable subscribers to answer them. (I’m hoping some experts would discover the community actually, and maybe hop on as mods). :)

Edit: I just updated the community rules so clarify that question posts are allowed, as long as you please attempt to at least Google it yourself first. 😆
