I dunno, I think he’s got more issues with the idea of her putting on heirs now that she’s on a stage than the idea of her changing her name in general.

That said, if she wants to be Marguerite, then whatever, let her.

No he’s saying she’s disgusting because she changed as got money by making her name needlessly fancier. That is distinctly different from gaining a name that fits and matches the named when their old one did not.

People not understanding political cartoons, as true today as it was in 1906.

Are you seriously trying to tell me that Billy can’t become William? Jenny can’t be Jennifer? That we are always and solely who we were born as?

because she changed as got money

gaining a name that fits and matches the named when their old one did not

The only difference is perspective. Marguerite says her old name didn’t match, therefore it didn’t. All people change, she changed and is the sole authority on who they are, it’s not your right to say if the reasons are valid. Everett’s righteous indignation at “fancier name” does not give him the authority to say he knows Marguerite better than she knows herself.

Same applies for trans and cis folke alike, even if Ye is a piece of shit person, he has exactly the same right to his name. Saying otherwise is attempting to control expression and personal autonomy.

Neither I nor the cartoon said that and I’m fact I just said the opposite of that. Just… What?

Sure, the cartoonist is saying it doesn’t seem genuine, it’s just bougie classiest shit.

You’re being obtuse, no one in that cartoon or myself here have said anyone can’t or shouldn’t do anything, they’re saying it has consequences one of which is people won’t think you’re genuine anymore if they ever did before.

I mean, Everett did literally say “You make me sick” and you explained that as “he’s saying she’s disgusting”, so I think it’s disingenuous to say he shouldn’t change her name. You call me obtuse, but I think you are trying to have it both ways.

If we agree she has the right to be Marguerite, then do we also agree that Everett is in the wrong for insulting her over it?

Classism is sickening, what’s your issue? As far as I can tell you’re implying he shouldn’t have an opinion of it’s offensive to someone. That’s sorta really really fucking fun given the claim of transphobia.

No, Everett can have his opinion and she can change her name, they aren’t mutually exclusive and I’m not really sure where you’re going with this odd cryptofacist tirade.

Correct, it’s none of his business. He can have his own opinion, but that doesn’t become a reason to voice it. You can think someone is ugly, but you’re rude to say it aloud. Your opinion does not inherently justify your actions.

That’s sorta really really fucking fun given the claim of transphobia.

I truly have no idea what you are trying to say here. People can have their personal views of trans folk, I can’t change that, but at minimum, leave us the fuck alone.

and I’m not really sure where you’re going with this odd cryptofacist tirade.

Tirade? Hey you responded to ME, I’ve only tried to expand and explain my reasoning after being called wrong. My lone point has only been that is Everett being an controlling ass.

Look, I’m confused and tired by this whole thing. Maybe just downvote me and lets move on with our lives.

You can’t be so blind as to not see your own hypocrisy. He’s entitled to his opinion, your entitled to yours and implying his opinion shouldn’t exist because it’s not aligned with your opinion. That’s called fascism. You understand your opinion is offensive/rude to someone, should your opinion exist?

I said your a hypocrite in a nice way. You’re assuming I’m not “one of you” whatever that might be boss… you get the irony there right?

She’s not trans! She’s fucking bougie and being mocked for it, is literally why her fur shawl has so comically many tails (more tails = more furs = more expensive). I’m not sure how or why your conflating this stupid shit.

That doesn’t make it not a tirade. “a long, angry speech of criticism or accusation.” It’s also not an insult but your fragility is glaring.

Of course he is, that’s the goddamn joke!

Look, I’m confused and tired by this whole thing.

                  That’s quite obvious.

Maybe just downvote me and lets move on with our lives?

Or I could attempt to educate you on your fledgling fascist behavior since you’ve put it out there, ironically much like Everett here.

Everett seems like the kind of guy who wouldn’t understand but wouldn’t care and would tell you to shut the fuck up for making a big deal out of something that doesn’t affect you.

Yeah, I mean, imo the comic makes it pretty clear that he’s not mad about her wanting to use a different name, but instead he’s mad about why she’s using a different name (because he thinks she’s being pretentious). I understand why Everett is mad and I can sympathize with him because pretentious people can be annoying as shit.

That said, while I can sympathize with Everett, I can also understand why some people might find it kinda offensive or concerning because it implies that Everett (and by extension, other people) have the right to judge whether or not your decision to change your preferred name is valid.

However, one should remember that this was the turn of the 20th century; most people didn’t know that trans people were a thing and externally, there wasn’t much that separated a trans woman from, say, a male crossdresser (I highly doubt stuff like HRT or GRS existed yet, or at the very least, that doctors who were aware and willing to carry out those procedures were very rare). As such, the idea of changing a base aspect of your identity was mainly a social thing imposed on you by the government and/or your peers (nicknames, marriage, academic/military titles, etc) and not something you picked yourself.1

In other words, I think this comic isn’t a great indicator of how Everett would actually react to someone who’s trans. If anything, I think it’s more likely that Everett would be supportive of trans people who are nice, begrudgingly look the other way if a trans person was getting in people’s faces about their identity2 while grumbling something about “they’re being an asshole but I don’t know if I can blame them, all things considering”, and completely destroy people who get pissy about trans people.

(Also, my personal head canon is that there are two, identical-twin Everetts: Everett True and Everett False. Everett True is the one who holds progressive views (or is shown to be progressive for the time), while Everett False is the one who holds views we consider to be offensive today. Why? It helps explain his wildly varying or contradictory views while also creating a sort-of meta game where you try to figure out if you’re seeing Everett True or Everett False. Also, Everett False is absolutely a bad actor hired by regressives to defame and slander Everett True for his progressive views and strong beliefs in social justice.)

1 Remember how picking your own nickname used to be seen as fairly cringy unless it was a simple shortening of your real name? You don’t pick nicknames, friends do.

2 Guys, listen, it happens, they exist, and they’re just as valid as anyone else. Sometimes it’s just the result of a misunderstanding, stress, and/or frayed nerves; but that doesn’t mean they’re not assholes for jumping down people’s throats. To be clear, I’m referring to the people who shoot first, ask questions later; and NOT people who are simply trying to correct mistakes or fight people being intentionally transphobic.

Edit: what I’m trying to say is that there are comics where Everett is a legitimate PoS, I’m just not sure if this is really one of them.
