Am I the only one that doesn’t care for podcasts?
I used to be annoyed by them, but I get it now. I started listening to them at work, it’s pretty nice to find a highly researched audio only format so I can focus on my work and learn something I care about
Sounds like good podcasts
99% of them are just people taking out of their ass though
oh yea, I’ve highly curated my podcasts at work. At least 80% scripted, roughly 20-80 minutes long, no, few, or unimportant visuals, detailed analysis of the topic, and maintains a sense of humor. I very rarely add a new one to the rotation
Care to share some recommendations? That sounds nice. I also struggle to get into podcasts cause its like wadding through a sea of garbage to find a lost ring.
I made another comment but
Darknet diaries
Search engine
Behind the bastards
Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History
Cumtown (The Adam Friedland Show now but the super old episodes are hilarious if you’re a dumbass like me)
Thank you!
I use the term podcast loosely, the only thing available to me at work is youtube so I also tend to include video essays and other things not considered podcasts. This is a list of some of my favorites.
- Some More News
- Unfuck the Republic (unftr)
- Behind the Bastards
- Democracy at Work
- the Deprogram
- Philosophy Tube
- Climate Town
- the Michael Parenti Library (speech archive channel)
- the Afromarxist (black radical archive channel)
- Alexander Avila
How dare you call out cumtown like that
Also everyone please check out Search Engine, Behind the Bastards, Darknet Diaries, and Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History.
Quick edit; I’ll always love cumtown also
Those already existed. They’re audiobooks.
And audiobooks don’t stop for ad breaks twice an hour and load up constant teases and recaps to bridge ad breaks and episodes.
unfortunately I can’t listen to audiobooks at work. I also prefer the length of podcasts for variety’s sake while working. I listen to audiobooks regularly as well, and know that listening to the same speaker for several hours causes me to tune it out rather than absorb it.

Yet.
You seem to only have listened to a certain kind of pkdcast. All podcasts I listen to are ad free but still have a high production value.
I’ve tried my share, including by people who have written actual books.
It’s a bad format.
Psst, sponsorblock
It’s not just the ads. The structure is built around the ads and they’re worse for it.
To me, they are an incomplete form of entertainment. They are not engaging enough to just sit down and listen to them without doing anything else. But I also can’t listen to them while doing something more complex at the same time.
But they are a perfect companion for playing a video game without story. Or caring for a baby.
I could only listen to them while I was employed as a driver. A few podcasts and NPR kept my brain happy.
When working at the computer I can only listen to EDM with no lyrics (possibly some ADHD).
I remember in our childhood there was a platform for any random person to broadcast their thoughts.
It was public access on cable television. And it was awful
I can’t listen to them anymore, mainly because I’m unable to focus on my work at the same time (ADHD).
The podcasts I used to listen to were (may have the name wrong) code heros by redhat, a greek mythology one, and the Nasa podcast.
I prefer script over unscripted personally.
I’ve tried several, and just can’t get into them.
I like the idea in theory, but in practice,it’s always a pattering mess that I’ve yet to complete a single episode of. I’ve tried many genres and creators. Never works. I really wish it was normal for podcasts to come with subtitles
Video podcasts? I thought podcasts implied audio only unless it said video somewhere.
I don’t understand, where did I say video podcasts?
“Subtitles” implies video I guess. Transcript maybe?
Transcript works too, also very rare
They operate as a kind of niche lifestyle thing that doesn’t apply to everyone. It’s a great option for those instances where you aren’t actively doing any mental work but want something to listen to:
- transportation
- household chores
- as a break between tasks
Music can also fit this niche, as well as audiobooks (I do all three).
That’s when I let my inner voice organise my thoughts. I have a firm belief people are missing out on being bored. It puts my motivation through the roof.
Please, I listen to music and I’m still bored
I listened to a podcast once. I wondered how this was different than radio. I listen to NPR and it seems real similar. Except the podcast was going on and on and on about their sponsors. At last NPR just says they’re sponsors names and a quick tagline only.

Have never listened to a podcast
Don’t have a dog to walk and capable of remote work so not driving
Prefer coding over passive content consumption
To be fair, the more podcasts, the more competition in making podcasts more high quality, the more quality podcasts I can listen to, the more reason I have to do boring chores or exercises.
Yay to podcasts.
I didn’t realise there were podcast libertarians
I do the same but with audiobooks and the simple fact is, the more choice there is, the more fake reviews and shite quality you have to wade through to find something worth listening to
Ironically, if my local government started a podcast about projects in my city, I would probably listen to it.
I’m picturing those automated severe weather warnings that play on the radio, except about potholes and crosswalk painting.
I like that we can all take time to talk about what interests us.
I have no problem with there being too many podcasts.
I disagree. The more the merrier
Completely agree. I love discovering ultra niche podcasts.
Should discuss that on a new podcast 🤔
I love podcasts, but I wish more of them were more like a… miniseries or something, or like how writers will submit to long-form magazines. Whatever amount of content you have for your idea, shoot your shot and be done with it. 3, 5, 10, 20 episodes, whatever it is. But, I understand that goes against the plan of hopefully getting sponsors and monetizing. I don’t know how to explain it properly…

Looks like you explained it properly to me!
There are some fictional podcasts that do that. They generally are part of a network and do a lot of cross promotion to make the monetization work out. There’s one “podcast” I like that does small runs of shows one after another on the same feed.
I get this is an attempt at a joke but…who cares? Something that seems stupid and pointless to one person is fascinating to another. Niche interests are always fun to explore.
Also, if someone wants to do a podcast on the anthill in their backyard, why not? It’s not hurting anybody. They’re just making something, and I admire anyone that follows through on actually making something and puts it out there, even if it’s not great. Just let people enjoy their lives, y’all.

The same could be said of this piece of satire, yet here you are… taking it bizarrely personal.
Because shitting on people doing their weird thing is shitty and discourages them from doing said weird things, and isn’t remotely the same as someone making something harmless?
This is some weird “you have to tolerate my intolerance” tactic you’ve chosen.
Ok good luck with your podcast, bye bye now. 👋
You could make a podcast about that.
I only search for podcasts that interest me anyway. If someone made a podcast about something that doesn’t need to be a podcast I’d never hear about it so why would I care?
Me someone with an illness who is unable to properly process sound: Podcasts are a thing?
Me someone without an illness who can sometimes process sound: Podcasts are a thing?
(I’ll just naturally tune out random people talking about random things. Hell, I’ll tune out just about anyone talking to my face about pointless topics. It’s not intentional, it’s just that my brain doesn’t care and has more important things to concentrate on.)
Same for music too then?
well music is entrenched in popular culture so I “hear” (more like read) a lot about it. Not really podcast though
