Well, well, well. I see Sony wants to kill all the goodwill their game has garnered with this linking bullshit.
Whelp, it was fun while it lasted… Good job sony.
Apparently this is already a massive problem for people who are in countries that PSN is not avalible in, using a VPN to create an account to link to has resulted in getting banned. Also seeing as most players are already past the Steam refund window, this is utterly unacceptable.
I dont want to blame Arrowhead too much, this reeks of partnership/publisher meddeling. If they made it so that linking account is not required if crossplay is disabled, I would find that acceptable.
Note that the refund window is for it to be automatically approved. Beyond that it has to be manually reviewed.
Anyone know if Ghost of Tsushima is gonna require a PSN account? You know, since they’re adding in that whole overlay thing. I always figured it was gonna be optional but now, I’m not so sure.
I would assume it will. Lesson learned: even if it doesn’t at launch, they could decide to require it at any time.
Devil’s advocate…
For Helldivers specifically here, the PSN requirement was listed on the Steam page at launch. It wasn’t enforced, but it was disclosed.
Not saying I agree, it’s a shitty move that definitely seems like it’s being forced by Sony who couldn’t care any less about publicity. But this requirement was already there for anyone that bothered to read the store page, even if it wasn’t enforced at the time.
If that’s the case, then the game should not have been sold to those in countries that don’t have access to psn.
No argument from me there. Especially since they’re saying the only reason it wasn’t required was some sort of technical issue at launch.
According to their Twitter account it’s only required for online legends access. Single player requires no account
Account required of you want the multiplayer aspect, which is why I will not buy it since that’s the only reason I want to buy and play it since I’ve already finished it on the PS4 with a physical copy.
I set Steam to ignore all Playstation products, but I’ve been meaning to do that for over a year now. It has nothing to do with Helldivers. I don’t Sony anymore.
Account linking plays a critical role in protecting our players
Could someone elaborate on this? How does linking protect players?
Edit: Found this video about the subject that seems to describe the situation well. (I am not affiliated with that video/content creator.)
The post says this: “This is our main way to protect players from griefing and abuse by enabling the banning of players that engage in that type of behaviour. It also allows those players that have been banned the right to appeal.”
I find that of dubious justification, but that’s their explanation.
Yeah, I also find it to be bullshit since steam already has a way to ban and a appeals process they can follow.
Nah, this is just corporate meddling to get more data to mine and sell and let it be stolen when Sony inevitably allows another data breach.
Sounds familiar to the reasoning they gave for having root level cheat detection in their game.
It lets players have their data leaked in one of Sony’s biweekly data breaches
