Faith is not trust but loyalty. There’s an old Islamic saying When, at noon the Caliph declares it midnight, behold the stars!

It’s giving in and saying there are five lights not because there are five lights, but because that is what your superiors insist you say.

To paraphrase Voltaire, Faith in absurdities is what leads to the faithful committing atrocities.
