It is more convenient… until you get your covid passport app yellow coded because the government knows you booked a train (that you never even took) to a city where there were 2 recorded cases (out of a population of 5 million), and you can’t enter any public buildings for a month (real thing that happened to a relative)

I’ve been back a fair amount, not in the last couple of years though. Things took a turn when it became necessary to use WeChat for everything. I have Complicated TM feelings about China and one of the icky feeling things is “let’s make everyone use one app for all financial transactions and travel bookings and literally every fucking thing ever”. Back in the day you could just swan around with a wallet full of cash and have the most fun
