Would me lying about doing impressions for YourNetworkIsHaunted’s cat be enough? I both dont know the cat and didnt actually do impressions? (Brb gotta update my dating profile).
I mean I even get that you would use some embellishment for entertainment value. But if the person who made the play writes you and corrects you, you should stop doing that, esp if you are doing the whole Rationalism. But yeah, that isn’t what the rich and powerful do, they make up shit and ignore corrections all the time. The power of being stubborn.
A while back somebody from themotte (when it still was on reddit) said about sneerclub vs themotte that the sneerclub wanted to do what is right, and they wanted to figure out what is true. And I often think about that when people in the Rationalist space do not really want to figure out what is true.
A jokingly Whorfian mind-lock, putting the jargon file in a sie like that and not converting it to a wiki. Second one, wanting to put everything in a wiki.
Not sure if smoothbrains and IQ levels are correlated, so perhaps 160IQ smoothies exist next to 100IQ smoothies. (Do agree the insult is perhaps not a thing we should be using (and this last sentence was also the only serious part of this post))
Yeah he was a prequel of whats to come re Gamers acting normally.
This article also reminded me of how when they are trying to promote AI agents they dont get further than shopping, a secretary, or help you cook with random ingredients. No real human connections
Yeah meant the seven suns series. Dune I need to get into the sequels first. (Think i might have read them decades ago). But yes the seven suns def had me persistent in reading out of a sort of spite and fools hope.
And after the horus heresy, im not sure I want another prequel, and rereading those is not an option.
And on a lol note, my parents got the newest Brown for themselves. The article about brown reminded me of the crash investigator book by Dan Simmons, shared a few of Browns writing flaws.
It was the guy angry about videogames. Just an ancient reference nothing special sadly. Just a random guy most people thought was wrong. Turns out GTA isnt a cop killing training simulator.
Of course the newest gta release is turning into a waiting for godot situation. (Apparently it was delayed again, not my game series, only liked the first two)
Sorry I meant that my hope was wrong, and too generous.
Yeah if you read the reviews the singularity is more a bit of a godot situation than something Yudi fears and has doubts over, which is a bit different than Yud who created the ‘we must make sure it is friendly’ institute earlier.
Bit like making a play about Jack Thompson but in the play he reviews video games.
That he keeps claiming it was about him, despite being told it wasn’t is just so odd.
But hey, mirrors how they talk about sneerclub as their personal nemesis (despite SC talking about all lot of them and now awful.systems being more general).
For the company hopefully, but it could also turn into ‘any mention of AI gets interpreted as a bad sign’ and you need to pivot before that affects the bottom line. (clearly the pendulum is towards it being a good sign atm).
I was hoping it was meant as a trollish sort of post (because anybody who didn’t realize that soon after ~2016 has not paid any attention), but then he did a bothsides. Really doing a ‘lets be open to the idea of gay people being stoned (and that isn’t even the correct quote, it is put to death, leviticus is specific (it also seems to only be about people in Israel, or else the land will vomit you out, and old testament. Kirk wasn’t even a good bible scholar). and trans people being eradicated’.
Yeah I recalled that was part of Frank Herberts thinking, but when I looked at a description of the books written by his son together with Kevin J. Anderson (of course (I read several of his saga of the seven suns books and I was not impressed with his ‘elemental aliens’ bit, but I in general have something against ‘the 4 elements stories’ as usually this isn’t that interesting as a plot device (avatar was great otoh). I did enjoy his star wars comics however. So I prob should give them another try esp as the series is now done)), and according to that Butler planned to be martyred and to intensify the war, so that is a bit of a different take on the revolutionary leader idea.
Wasn’t there a bit in the OG Dune lore where the person the Jihad was named after actually didn’t want to start a Jihad? (I think that was retconned into ‘they sneakily did try to become a martyr to start the war’ bit, which sort of messes with the themes of Dune that even lofty goals can have horrible consequences, see Paul).
Yeah in the complexity theory sense. I think it was already proven that the … shit sorry can’t find the correct words… how analog number storage can have arbitrary precision (?? not sure if that is the correct way to describe it) provide no benefit over digital ones due to various factors. Sorry if it is vague, it has been a long time I ago I really learned about this stuff.
Yeah hope for your job that they don’t bet the company on the 2027 thing. Because that would be quite the failure of management. If they just use it as a tool for sales I get it (don’t like it, but I get it), the CEO being all in on it is worrying though, which is why I hope he has also made predictions for what if he is wrong and AI never advances anymore significantly (or even becomes a liability as a sales tool).
You would hope that, if they take their job seriously, the managers who predict AI mooning, that they also write predictions for the other situations. And not just the best case scenarios.
Who can even say what’s real, asked the wallet inspector.
According to the big inspector, cryptographic signing.
Do like somebody left a nice trap there:
(Unrelated, hope Stross’s recovery is going well, sorry for being a bit parasocial relationshippy here).
I like singularity sky more as a sort of critical book about how a post scarcity singularity would be easy to mess up. Very funny that it inspired the US to give free phones to Afghans to try and combat the Taliban.
