I wouldn’t say to interview mods, unless they were directly in the centre of organising this, but they give almost no insight into what the broader reaction is outside of the comments of the CEO. They don’t bother to peer into a few subreddits and see what discussion is like, nor mention any decrease in users, etc.; they just restate Spez’s talking points as if he’s the only thing relevant.
It’s even more hilarious when the label is much more accurately applied to capital owners such as himself; they are the ones actually making money off of other people’s labour via their ownership (of a company rather than land).
The few I’ve seen that have promoted alternatives usually just say something like “lemmy,” or provide a whole host of alternatives, resulting in a wide spread across platforms for the few that do migrate.
Convenience, short sightedness, and outright lies. Most won’t directly be affected by Reddit’s recent changes, so it’s more convenient for them to just not care and continue using the site uninterrupted. For now, those money-hungry policies don’t affect them much, so they’ll just not care about it, until of course the ever growing hunger of capital requires more money, thus leading to more restrictive monetisation schemes (Twitter is considering limiting DMs without a subscription now, for example). And of course, you have people buying into the lies that that is the only way for sites like Reddit to exist, nevermind any alternatives (both to Reddit itself and within its monetisation plans).
Right now moderator, subscriber, etc. data for stuff from different platforms and instances is broken on kbin, usually just displaying ernest as the owner of anything from a different instance.
I’m honestly surprised how quickly discord has gone to shit vs. how long everyone I know was using stuff like Skype and TS beforehand.
I also hate how people try to use discord as a replacement for more traditional forums (including stuff like Reddit and kbin) instead of as just a chat and messaging platform. It sucks at it, please stop trying to make it work for that people.
Personally, I see Revolt as more likely to win out if/when Discord collapses than Matrix. I’ve only heard Matrix discussed on platforms within the fediverse, whereas Revolt I’ve heard some rumblings about by others who haven’t touched anything like Mastodon or Lemmy/Kbin in their lives.
Either way, I’d be glad to see more FOSS win out over yet capital controlled social media.
