I jumped off a dock into an glacial lake once (in summer) and it forced the air out of my lungs like getting punched in the stomach, all the energy in my limbs just disappeared and I felt like a wet noodle. I could barely keep my head above water.
It was within a few meters of shore so no great danger, but I can’t imagine swimming for that long a distance under frozen water.
