As soon as they mentioned “raiding a dungeon”, the first thing that came to my mind was Frieren stuck in a mimic. And of course that happened.
…is there any replica of a mimic nearby? That could solve the problem for Denken and his group.
Start throwing grimoires around to distract her!
Give her a bed! And no Fern replica to wake her up!
Frieren needs the tried and tested Dark Souls paranoia strat, poke every single chest you find because it just might be a mimic.
Talk about a final boss! I always hate mirror copy enemies in games, they always end up either being really easy, unable to properly utilize your character’s tools or an absolute nightmare to deal with. Denken’s team has a hell of a battle ahead of them!
So in the (distant?) past at least one person opened a mimic detected by Mikheit and got a real treasure chest, causing the spell to have a known 99% success rate instead of 100%. Could Frieren be that person and she was just too humble to admit it?
Also, from what we’ve seen of the damage caused by mimics (essentially nil), a 1% chance of getting real treasure is not too bad depending on the potential value of the treasure ~as many gacha game players know~.
Yeah, the mimics of this world seem to be an inconvenience at most, compared to the death monsters I know them for. If you have a teammate to save you, it really does seem worth it to try for a rare piece of loot. Frieren might actually be onto something with her antics!
The replica even nailed Frieren’s uninterested expression. With an episode next week titled “Perfect Replicas” I think we know which type of fight this is going to be for Denken and co.
The second round begins! I personally wonder what a unified group of test takers could have done to this dungeon. The fights against the replicas would have been interesting. The Laufen vs. Laufen fighting animation was great and I wish it would have lasted longer. Overall, the coordination of Denken’s group seems pretty good. It’s too bad the young girl got trapped and had to leave, but if she struggled against gargoyles, then Shadow Frieren was going to chew her up.
I bet all of you thought that Dungeon Meshi was the only show this season that was going to have a mimic educational segment. Well, Frieren should know more about mimics than just about anybody else out there. They are pretty much her mortal enemy. It’s something that her and Chilchuck can bond over.
Also, I remember when I was reading the manga, it wasn’t until about this point that I really started to get how broken Fern is. It had been mentioned before that she was the youngest to become third class, etc. However, for Sense, a notoriously strict First Class Mage, to come out and say how exceptional Fern is, helped it sink in. I don’t think it really counts as a spoiler to say that Fern continues to be a badass as this story goes.
Also, these two seem to be getting along a bit better than at first.
I love how Denken’s opinion of Frieren has changed from “I can take her” in round one to, “we’re dead” when facing just hercopy in round 2.

That included me.
I like how everyone is rushing to the end while Frieren is set to map the whole dungeon out. Himmel taught her good.

I wonder why there was only a replica of Laufen for Denken’s group to fight?
Did they dispatch the other replicas off camera?
I wonder if Frieren has contingency against perfect copies. They are mimics but on much higher level.
There are few interesting world building tidbits this episode that makes me go: "Hmmmm… " What are the coins? Are they something akin to geocache log? Was that crystal a dungeon core? What happened to that one lone wolf when facing a copy of themself? Will the golems be strong enough against copy of frieren?
The pipe organs in the soundtrack really give that dungeon synth vibe.
