We had a very efficient and funny campaign to inform the general public that screenshots are not memes. However, people keep posting screenshots in this community. I propose that we establish a rule banning screenshots. Maybe there is a dedicated community or screenshots enthusiasts could create one. Of course if this proposal is widely opposed, I will withdraw it and go hide in a cave, never to be heard again. Also, cartoons are not memes either but this is a battle for another day.

Edit: added brackets to the title for clarity

No need to hide in a cave, bro, but screenshots-of-screenshots, at least as far as I’ve seen lately, are already a part of “the culture.” There’s no winning this war; you can only hope to survive it.

I beg to disagree. Lemmy is new, doesn’t have to cave to “the culture” that is now prevalent on reddit. Memes are created by users. They are OC. Screenshots are reposts by design. I was hoping Lemmy would be a better place than what reddit had become

I already see people proudly making screenshots of screenshots, on purpose. The Streisand Effect took over already.

We can hope. But in the end it’s the people who post that will decide. I think we should continue to allow the people and culture of the sub to define itself, instead of making mandates

If we do that, the culture will be defined by people who don’t care about the culture.

A proper discussion followed by polls to establish rules would greatly increase the content quality now that lemmy is moving towards mainstream.

On Reddit, wasn’t that kind of thing mostly just relegated to other subs? Similarly to other whatever-th degree meta jokes. Could be a thing here too.
