Usato and the other characters seem interesting and likeable so far.

I think this is the best aspect of this story (I am up to date on the manga, but not read the novels). The ensemble of characters are compelling and have good chemistry with one another. In particular, Rose’s character is great and I the opening parts of this story are my favorite, a big contributor to that is that some later arcs feature a lot less of her.
