I’ve recently decided to try and degoogle my life, or at least lessgoogle it. One app I use regularly is GoogleVoice. It works really well to keep my work and personal numbers separated. Also works reasonably well to keep my personal number clean from spam. What is out there that provides similar functionality?

I’ve been looking at voip.ms but haven’t tried it yet. Need to figure out my usage in a typical month to get a cost idea and figure out a voip/sip app. This is more of a fully control destiny type approach. The other option, more appealing but not as flexible, it’s MagicApp by MagicJack. I used MagicJack internationally for years and it worked great, it’s probably the best bet.

voip.ms is decent. They provide their own version of a PBX and it’s a good company. I’ve used them in the past for a lot of different things, most recently as a number for sending faxes and receiving them a few years ago while dealing with disability benefits for our daughter. They also offer fancy on hold music if that’s your thing. :)

Not using anything right now for Mobile SIP. I am like the OP - on GVoice but want to move eventually away from there. As for home use with the fax and stuff, I just logged into their site. With that said, I used to have an ATA Adaptor (Linksys SPA1) unlocked so I could use it with my regular phone. That was around 2016 or so. We, like most people now are 100% mobile so, not a single corded or cordless phone in the house otherwise.

Voip.ms is great, been using them for businesses for years. It’s dirt cheap - probably cost you like $3/month.

I run my own Asterisk server for calls and have that working well, but I don’t really have a solution for SMS/MMS. My VoIP provider does support at least SMS, but I haven’t been able to get Asterisk to integrate with it. Kinda gave up for now on that part.

Interested to see if anyone has any self-hostable solutions.

I’m looking in to this too. Will signal do it? I am unsure if you can receive calls or call/sms with it to users not on signal

Signal unfortunately removed sms support afaik. Really threw a wrench in my plan to attempt to move my friends and family off of Snapchat and texting lol

I haven’t found anything solid. It’s dropped off my plate for now.

I will probably end up self hosting some xmpp for it.
