Welcome to today’s daily kōrero!
Anyone can make the thread, first in first served. If you are here on a day and there’s no daily thread, feel free to create it!
Anyway, it’s just a chance to talk about your day, what you have planned, what you have done, etc.
So how’s it going?
The first half made me wonder if there was a new Lemmy instance coming…
I’m not there yet…but I am really liking Lemmy, maybe I will look into it in the future. My home server is quite lightly loaded…
There are lots of people running instances just for themselves. There are pros and cons to it, but I think mostly people do it for fun :).
Would you recommend running a local server or is there no real point other than the fun factor? Any major benefit?
I think the benefits are just related to you being an admin. E.g. you can block instances, change settings to suit yourself, that sort of thing.
But if it’s just you, then for example the “local” feed is a bit useless. The annoying quirks when you’re the first person to search for a community will now happen every time you search for a new community, because you’re the only person.
And of course when something breaks (and it will), it will be you that has to fix it. So make sure that’s fun for you!
There would be other benefits if you weren’t just running it for yourself, but had a community. E.g. if you are a subreddit looking to move everyone to Lemmy, then there are advantages to setting up your own subject-specific instance rather than just making a community on an existing instance.
Thanks Dave. I’ve got the will, the gear, the bandwidth and the skills - just can’t see the point at the moment since I don’t have a community to support. Happy to support lemmy.nz instead :)
All good, happy to have you :)
