In fairness to accuracy, it seems that the bike + 2 trailers can haul over 1000lbs. The bike on its own doesn’t have that kind of weight limit, but it’s still impressive!
It appears to be a relatively normal diamond-frame bike (not even a long-tail) with an integrated rear rack/cargo box and a trailer. Is the weight rating just for the bike itself, or the whole thing?
If it’s the whole thing, that doesn’t actually impress me much. My long-tail cargo bike is rated for 450 lbs including rider/300lbs rear rack cargo just on the bike itself, and I could easily imagine towing 700 lbs with it, given a suitably robust trailer.
1000 pounds ~ 453.6 kg
500 kg per the article. The 1000 lbs in the headline is a rounded conversion of the metric number in the article.
Right, double conversion :)
The fact that the cargo is more protected than the operator is just so much capitalist distopia.
I guess you’re probably right but to play devils advocate that’s just the tooling they have at their disposal rather than an advanced new custom design. And cargo also needs to be protected from tampering as protection from theft.
That’s just a rationalization for putting protection of property and capital ahead of people. Not a very good one either. I get it, “Cars bad.” But the attitude in this whole comment section is just so inhumane and disconnected from any real human empathy. …As demonstrated by the comment below.
This is the dumbest shit I’ve read all day. It’s a bike, if you build a box around it it’s not a fucking bike anymore. You’d be adding a shit load of unnecessary weight, making it more difficult and dangerous to ride because visibility and hearing would be impaired, and you probably wouldn’t even be protecting the rider if they got hit by a car. What are they going to do put a fucking seat belt on?
jfc
Maybe just find another way to transport goods that keeps the operator safe. That seems like a reasonable ask. There’s no need to be such a prick.
Yeah fair, I was being a prick. I’m just so tired of hearing how capitalism is literally the cause of every problem. Transporting goods by cargo bike is a fantastic thing that we should be doing more of. Instead of asking how we protect the riders of those cargo bikes maybe ask why they need protection in the first place? Shouldn’t cyclists be able to ride anywhere they want in their city safely?
This is called a quadricycle. Its a bike… Or is it? This is a common solution to the safety concerns OP is raising.
How is this any safer? Are you sure it’s not designed to protect the rider from the elements?
I dont know for sure, but that height is great for visibility.
I mean I don’t want delivery cyclists hit by cars, that would be completely unacceptable. Maybe you have more familiarity than me with the dangers of delivery cycling.
Edit: after looking st quadricycles… Yeah other companies are offering a lot more protection. In my perfect world no one is getting hit, but in this world we have some great ideas to keep delivery cyclists safer.
you’re right, if my cargo deserves a box and a roll cage then I also deserve a box and a roll cage. There exist suitable quadricycles.
